Transmission "jolting"

Hello CX-5 Owners:

I have noticed that the automatic transmission in my CX-5 would "jolt" in these scenarios:

1. Upon driving up a steep driveway, as I let my foot go of the acclerator and step on the brake pedal, the car would give a really rough "jolt". I am almost certain that it is not from me braking the car in a sudden manner.

2. Coasting down a down hill from a near complete stop, the car would again "jolt" before the car would start to gain speed from the hill. (not stepping on the acclerator other during down hill)

3. When I am driving in "manual" mode, from first gear to second gear has a really rough shift unless the engine is higher than 2000RPM. What I do is just before shifting, i would take the foot off from the acclerator padel, shift, then step on the acclerator. From what i observed, it only happens for first to second gear. HOWEVER, no rough shifting if i leave it in automatic mode

Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Regards!

Transmission jolting

As long as the trans has the correct fill of ATF [not underfull especially] and hasn't been subjected to trauma like towing too heavy loads up steep inclines,.thus causing unusual wear,..you are looking at one of 2 things,.. ie the trans needs a full service to adjust critical things like bands and clutches and /or there are no broken engine or transmission mounts.

I had a Mitsi Diamante once that changed well, except when the load was coming off the trans just before it was due to change up. In this case it would cause the engine/trans to jolt because the front engine mount was broken allowing too much movement under torque.

Further, when the tras needs adjusting [servicing] the running clearances of the bands/clutches were too wide, meaning when they operated, there was a jolt.

Best of luck with her :-)

heck, it's a brand new car! lets hope it doesn't need full service or mounts are busted! my guess is it's the reaction of the sky drive tranny

OK,..I missed that part :-). Even tho,..I'd check the ATF for color and any burnt-oil type smells. Some auto-trans in some cars these days are sealed,..crazy stuff. Healthy ATF should be a clear color [cherry red?] and not have any cloudiness [which means friction components have been shedding material]. Over heated ATF has a distinct burnt smell about it. I concede his car should be OK in these departments, being new,..but something is causing it. The Sky-drive tranny can cause these symptoms?? How so?

it's a new design...maybe it's doing something normal ir maybe it needs to reprogrammed? bring it back to the dealer

I too am experiencing the "jolting" issue in my 2013 CX-5 Touring AWD, automatic. My issue occurs only at highway speeds and is most noticeable under load ie. climbing a hill or passing. The downshift from 6th or 5th gear into 4th results in a severe shift that "jolts" the vehicle. The vehicle then shifts smoothly for a mile or so before the severe downshift returns. The wizards at Mazda have declared the shifting normal. I disagree and have been left no option but to pursue Arizona's Lemon Law. I like the CX...to bad Mazda will not take a greater interest in resolving the problem.

I doubt the "lemon law" approach will accomplish anything, especially if the techs checked everything out several times and NPF.

Mazda must be confident the "direct feel" of the tranny is normal as advertised. Not your father's Olds or usual slushbox as they say.

But the complaints hopefully will result in tranny software/firmware update that will make these downshifts a little less harsh.
