Should I trade my 03 Pro LX for an 04 Civic SI?

We just bought a Civic from them a few weeks ago for my wife, and we got 10%. That's how I know it can be done.

haha. You must be ******* retarded?

Mistake 1. - You go and get a new civic with a 10% interest on it
Mistake 2. - You are thinking about trading in your perfectly fine working car for a civic while overpaying for it and getting into more debt

But as long as you ask a bunch of strangers on the internet, everything is fine... (braindead

Wow, the force is strong with this one...

Such intelligence. It's barely even worth my time replying...

Did you even bother reading all 4 pages before you made yourself sound like an idiot?

while I am skeptical of this "deal" you are getting, I think you would be stupid not to jump on it. first things first, print your goddamn credit report. Like now. then see where you sit... Its an '04, so you want to aim to fix your loan on 4 years, 5 MAX. the dealer will try and extend to 6, but if he does that walk away cuz you will end up in the same boat 3 years down the road.

Second, if you can get 10% through a dealer, go to a credit union and you should be able to get 5-7% (its a known fact that they will undercut dealers... happens all the time). Do this and reconfigure your payments. You said you were military, why not get a federal loan through that??? I know the services exist...

Third, if you seriously want a new car, make damn sure that you will keep this one to the end of the payment term. The biggest debt problem with vehicles are the car whoring people who cant keep a car for more than 1-2 years (raises hand) and transfer the balance to a new loan. Before you know it, you are paying EVO-like amounts for an econobox... Then, you get outta debt fast if you just pay off the vehicle and keep it for a short time after your loan is up. Then you have NO neg. equity on a car you are using. Trust me, its a good feeling.

yeah, but the deal he's talking about will NOT have the balance of the old car transfered. I have NEVER jumped into a deal that transfered money over onto the loan, and I don't plan to. If he can't get me what I want, I wont take the damned deal and i'll look into refinancing. We bank with the credit union, if we could've gotten better, we would have. And the military wont give me a better interest rate.. again, if we could, we would have. I'm not some stupid teenager trying to buy his first car...

For you idiots that need an explanation of why I bought my wife a civic: She was driving an 01 focus that was in dire need of an alignment, new brakes (full rotor and drum replacement), two new tires, new belts/hoses, new power/ground wires (damn factory defects), and we still couldn't figure out why the engine keeps stalling... not to mention it wasn't under warranty. I'd rather her be in a Civic with a 7 year/100,000 mile warranty than in a maintenance moneypit.

Any other 'You're an idiot' comments that need clarification for the idiots who ask?

yesiownaskyline: i'm not saying you are an idiot. i'm just saying you and everybody is discrediting me thinking i'm not researching everything... It's really quite insulting. The point of this thread was to see who thought it was a good idea and who didn't and get some discussion on it. Is that too much to ask, or do I have to now assume everybody on the internet is out to flame me for wanting to sort out a few financial issues and get into something i'll enjoy more...

hey man, I didnt mean to jump on your s***... That was not my intention. I just see that FAR too many people (not just here) get their asses ***** by dealers. I am sure that you did your homework, and if thats the case then great... I wrote that not directed at you, but also to the 100's of other people reading this who may in fact be in the same situation as you.

It's ok, I wouldn't consider this deal if it weren't gonna be beneficial. Hell, i'm going from a Protege to a Civic! I never thought I would consider that! But I'd rather have comfortable seats and a driving position that doesn't hurt my back. Plus the side-airbags, 7 year/100,000 mile warranty, 5-lug all-wheel disk brakes w/ ABS, 2-door, 160 hp, cheap and abundant aftermaket, and other such upgrades seem far superior than what the LX had to offer. As fun as it is, I need to get out of the hole with this car. If a Civic SI will do that, then i'll hold onto it for a while.

Heck, the Civic is the first car my wife told me if that if I wanted to, I could get a custom paintjob done. Now THAT'S what i'm talking about... YOU try to get your wife to approve that... :)

how much do you owe on your car?

$14,500

He says he can make it work, so I'll see what he happens. I told him I'll only consider it if he can pay off my car, and he said "That shouldn't be a problem."

I'm going in after work today, so you'll get an update after I get back.

that's very nice that he'll pay off your car, but they're not going to give you 7500 more than trade-in value of your car (check out KBB.com)

insist on seeing all the numbers, don't just let them go in the back room and magically come back with a monthly payment

I can guarantee your new loan is going to be for at least 20k principal

Again, i'm not ignorant. ALL the figuring for the last Civic was done directly in front of me. It was a one-on-two session with the finance girl when we worked everything out. I understand you trying to help, but try to think up things a smart person wouldn't think of...

I know, "If you're so smart, why'd you get into the situation you are now with the Protege!"

cuz I understood everything I was getting into and I had tons cash to spare for a while. Basically I knew but I didn't care. Now that Crystal's out of the military, the 'I don't care' attitude took a back seat.

Leppy, I say take the advice being given to you on here w/ a grain of salt. When it all comes down to it YOU are the one making the car payment, so if you could see the rationality of paying less for a newer/better car then hey go for it.

Oh, I know. I'm just gathering opinions, not advice. I was kinda hoping I'd get into a car discussion, not a finance discussion.

dude I'm not trying to insult you, sorry.

I'm sure you aren't an idiot, just trying to make sure you think through things.

I didn't read all of this but I say go for it. I have an o3 lx and while it's a good car it isn't as fun to play with because there just ins't enough support out there to mod it and not break the bank if you know what I mean. I was doing a search for a friend here at work and there are honda parts every where.

if you want a comment about just the car, I say no way should you go for it

proteges are a blast to drive, and every honda I've ever driven has been an absolute snooze

there's my $0.02 about the car

Good luck,
Hey think of this first though. If you like the civic have you seen the new 06 si? Man that one I like. You could always wait it out make a few more payments. You know when the 06 comes there will be deals on them.
