Toyo v. Dunlop: Dunlop ScAm

I am sure the toyos will be a better replacement...for now. but what i have noticed with the lower profile tires is that they can get flats fairly easily. I have seen people get rims damaged with too low a profile. But handling wise they are excellent. i am at least happy that even with the dunlops the handling is always good. Just they wear quickly. oh well. i will comment on the comparison later.

tires are on...i gave them a nice initial workout. Possibly less roadnoise. there is 2003 red p5 @ my work with dunlop fm901. When i compared them visually the Toyo's had more tread grooves that were deeper. thicker tread too. looked more aggressive also. Unfortunately it will be near impossible to put the tires to their limits since they are on the front but so far no complaints at all. I think the model is the pro(somethin)TPT...not TS-1. but they are definately VR rated.

Regarding Dunlop SP5000 vs FM901... (tire noise)

I just had to replace both rear OEM tires due to a four inch nail through the sidewall of one tire. I mean through the sidewall! The head of the nail was flush with the tread and the point of the nail was sticking out right by the rim!! We - my tire guy, whom I trust a whole lot, and I - opted to replace both tires in order to avoid the problems of uneven wear since the one with the nail in it had 17K on it. My tire guy was not able to locate any of the OEM tires within any less than five days without paying all kinds of up-charges. So, he installed the two Dunlop FM901 tires on the rear. They were less expensive, they are directional, and they were available, so we went with it. But... They are decidedly noisier than the OEM tires. I know... I should just get a custom exhaust and install a CAI (I have actually thought about the CAI, but that's another forum) and I'd never notice the increase in the noise from the tires. I just don't want to hear my tires changing pitch as I pick up speed.

I think I am going to return the FM901 tires and wait a few days for the OEMs, which, very much to his credit, my tire guy was very willing to do. I guess that is why I've done business exclusively with him for the last 20 years.

Any other suggestions for replacement tires; ones that aren't noisy?

Thanks!

i had dunlop fm901s on my 240sx, from a rwd platform the fm901 were a great tire, cheap and massive grip...but the tread wear is extensive on them, only 280 i belive compared to 300 plus on others....if u dont care about tread wear rating or "road noise" get the fm901s and enjoy some serious wet and dry grip....falken also makes nice tires as well.....i dont like toyo

I noticed that the toyo's were much better under wet conditions. the sp5000 would slide very easily under heavy rain. Now that isnt a problem anymore with the toyo's. i recommend them heavily over the dunlops.

Tires - road noise...

Thanks for the input folks, it has certainly given me lots of possibilities other than the OEM Dunlops. Tomorrow is Monday and I'll be in touch with my tire guy. I am going to ask him about the Falken ZE512 in a 205/50/16. We'll see what happens...
