Toyo v. Dunlop: Dunlop ScAm

Ok so i have had my p5 for over 2yrs. I have comsistently used the sp5000 cause they seemed to be decent tires...good traction and cornering abilities, VR rated, .79g stock, .80g+- currently. However over time i realized that they wore very quickly. I do like to drive my car hard but rarely break loose in the turns. The dealer would constantly tell me i need new tires with tires that were almost new. Well after having gone through multiple replacements...flat tires...odd wearing. etc...also it isnt the alignment or anything mech. causing this wear. and after i smoked 2 more tires this weekend(damn block of wood in center of road w/ nails:wtf: ), both left tires, i was forced to get the Toyo's since as of now there is a 2,000 tire backorder from dunlop for sp5000 and the dealer doesnt even have them in stock. So i get the toyo's and honestly they look much nicer then the dunlops which surprised me. The tread pattern looked better as well as the tread quality. So **** dunlop...cause of them i had my car fall on my hand...that and the stupid &%$# jack stand. So if u have a p5 dont get anymore dunlops...not like u could...and if u r gonna buy one make sure to get the toyo's. U will save hundreds of $ i m sure.

i checked everywhere in my area of nj. Sears said there was a massive b/o and the dealer said they have to special order. Most other places just laugh. tirerack probably could have helped me but i alwasy need the tires ASAP

i will check later and post 2nite. once i get my tires rotated i will comment on them further. the toyos are goin up front and the dunlops are in the back...hopefully they will be gone soon. the size is the same as the dunlop 195/50/16. and they are the same $ or less. I paid $126 each@STS. tirerack could do them for less then $100 i bet.

Your judging the toyo a superior tire soley for apperance :wtf:

Toyo T1-S' come in 195/50R16, which is looking to be my next tire. =) I have Yoko AVS ES100's on now, in 205/50R16. The T1-S' have awesome results on the Miata and various other sports cars, so should fit the bill nicely. Never been a fan of Toyo's all season line, though; I prefer the T1-S for summer and the Observe G-03 for winter.

i had 2 sets of toyos split at the sidewall on me and i have never bought another set since. they did grip pretty good though

well as of now driving on them they arent less superior...they may even be better handling. And the rubber quality over the sp5000 is definately visible as well as nicer tread patterns which also look deeper and deeper/wider channels for water. however they are uni-directional ...not omni-directional like the dunlops...probably their only drawback as of now. I might think differently in 15,000 miles if they are bald though. mY dunlops had a sidewall split too. That may be from alignment problems though.

The Dunlop SP Sport 5000M's were unidirectional, I thought? I know the tread looked like it could face either direction, but I thought the center sipes only worked properly rotating in one direction, as, I thought, they were offset slightly in one direction? Hmm.

Just because you aren't chirping your tires doesn't mean you aren't wearing them out faster. Make sure you keep an eye on your tire pressure. Also you said you like to corner hard, this takes tread off very quickly. My talon shreds SP8000's in auto-x's in turns because of this. No the tires weren't squealing, they were just shreading the rubber off the tires. It doesn't mean my tires were bad, it just means I was being hard on them. If you get a higher traction tire, you can drive the same and possibly not wear it as quickly as the tire doesn't have to work as hard to maintain traction. As far as how a tire looks, that means nothing for a review, unless you bought it for show. Some other things to think about are ride quality and road noise. I had Michelin Pilot's a while ago that did really nice all around on my other car. It's not the tire's fault that you didn' properly jack and support your car either. Next time you review something, ask yourself what it's purpose is really for, then you can make a somewhat intelligent sounding review. I'm not trying to sound like a prick, this just drives me nuts when people post bad information. So far I have 20k on my Mazda, I've had the tires rotated 1 time, and still have lots of tread left, and yes I do make it a point to take the twisties instead of the short ways on as many drives as possible;).

umm.. also never get Champiro's 195-50-16!! They suck (road noise inside, wearing out quickly after only 10,000, and ugly groove pattern! just wanted u guys to know

I don't plan to buy the Dunlop SP Sport 5000m's when they need replacement either, but not because they are bad, but I want some higher performance. I am thinking of:

Dunlop SP Sport 9000
Goodyear Eagle F1 GS

That, or sell my rims and get a set of MP3 alloys...

when I need replacements I'am going to purchase the neo-gen's from nitto have you guys seen those tires  there sweet!

I too had problems with the stock dunlops, i actually went to the dunlop FM901, they are dirrectional and have handled pretty good so far.

225/40R17 Nitto 450's grip pretty good. Witht the shorter sidewall, the steering is more responsive. The 17" wheels I had those on were much heavier than stock, so I can't say for sure how much worse the ride was (shorter sidewall will hurt the quality, as well as the heavier unsprung weight). As far as straight line, the tires didn't like to spin, but axle hop was harsher. Hitting 2nd gear the tires would hold better than the clutch, and a few times they would spin a little. The car followed the road a little but not too bad.
