Top Speed

my P5 hit 135 then cut out... mp3 ecu,obx header, msp axle back, underdrivepully, and CAI.. slight down hill and pulled to 135 pretty fast, very close to redline though at that speed.. if someone was runing different wheel/tire combo (taller overall) you can get more speed before engine cut, though the speedo would still read the same

I did a little gear calculator just for fun once, and 136 mph is close to where the engine supposedly redlines in 5th gear.

A bunch of local guys here have pegged the speedometer at 220 km/h (137.5 mph... know one guy who blew his engine from doing it too often and too long.)... but you can't do it on a stock car... there's not enough push from a 130 - 140 hp FSDE to push past the aerodynamic brick wall these cars hit past 210 km/h. You need at least 150-160 bhp to do it.

This is the correct answer. The car is drag limited until you can break the horsepower barrier, which isn't much past stock.

Then you are GEAR limited. Based on the red line and the gearing. If you move red line up, you can go faster, but then you just put a grenade under the hood. There is no govenor in this car.

Thats what I thought! I dont think i want my car to go faster then 220km (138mph) anyways, that's just insaine. My cousin hit 157mph with his limited addition neon (it was a R/T / SRT-4 prototype). A closer gear ratio only means you'll accelarate faster.

Has anyone been running a aftermarket turbo for a while with no problems?

I ran the now non-exsistent Flyin' Protege turbo kit for well over 40,000 miles with no issues what-so-ever.

It would have lasted a lot longer (which is typical of their kits) had I not taken the little beast to the dealership for service. But, stuff happens, live an learn, yadda-yadda-yadda.

At any rate, things would have held up no problem.

then what did i run into when i hit 135? it has felt like every other speed limiter i have hit

I suppose, you could argue that the red line is a form of a govenor because of the fuel cut.

You hit red line and hit the fuel cut which is built in. However, it is not a speed limiter of sorts that most people would say is a govenor. It is all really semantics at this point.

Something everyone needs to remember, the tach is not very accurate in this car, and the speedo is questionable as well. Most speedo's are calibrated for a specific speed given a specific tire size for stock. The stock protege came with 15's or 16's. There were two part numbers for the speed sensor, presumably one for the 15 and one for the 16. The MP3 and MSp run 17's stock. There is an error factor there, plus the given error above and below the given speed calibration.

Bla bla bla...You get the point I think. This whole topic has been argued to death on this board more times than I care about. Dead horses need to be buried.

So the dealership messed it up? how did they manage that??

Approximately how much HP where you getting?

155 some eh.. I'm looking for 200 or so, need to beat my cousin and his cobalt ss supercharged. On paper, factering in the weight and so, I need a little over 180 to do it. Right now i have him in 1st and 2nd. But he doesnt knwo how to drive it.

ya, it's off topic, but I started the thread and we have since answered my question. how do we go faster eh!!? more HP!

Yes...

Keep in mind, that figure was on about 6.5 psi w/ minimal fuel tuning and no timing control. With better management and the "new turbos" out now in the kits on the market, 180 isn't out of the picture. It'll take work, but MAM has some nice stuff, so does Hi-Boost.

Ya for sure. I dont want to run too high of a psi, i was thinking no mor then 10psi. I really like the Hi-Boost kit. I've only heard bad things of MAM.. It definately takes some work and cash to get good HP. I also want to play it safe and get stuff like a tranny cooler, better breaks etc...

It is better to be safe than sorry. Pick the manufacturer you want, and do it right the first time. You will save money in the long run.

Most of you guys are lucky. I live at almost 6100 feet above sea level. My pro 1.8L topped out at 101. I had an automatic and as soon as it shifted into 4th, the car stopped accelerating.

I'm definately looking into the Hi Boost kit for my soon to be MP3. Looking to get a daily driver around 250 at the crank. With that kit and proper tuning, it should be a snap.
