took car to dealer for service, quick oil question

maybe for your dealership... but its a BIG no to even state what oil type to use on the ticket!

all it should say is "Lube, oil and filter"
if the customer is specifically requesting something, then it can say "Customer requests oil change with 5W30"

I'll say it again... it is the tech's responsibility to put the right parts in! oil is charged out as a "part", so its his dumbass's fault if he puts 5W20 in an engine that calls for 5W30... he's supposed to know... if he doesn't know, then he needs to RTM instead of ASSuming.. it's his ******* job!

even though my car has had every synthetic oil change to date at mazda with the same techs and supervisors, yet its my responsibility to request mobil1 even though they know. 2 times i caught them almost putting in the wrong oil.

mobil1 lube express = jiffy lube

enough said!

Don't think you can pin down oil change companies that way. It really comes down to the people that work in each place. The guys there offered to let me watch them under the car if I wanted. Oil / trans fluid changes aren't rocket science. Just comes down to ethics of the people working there. Bottom line is I know / trust them.

People that I don't trust now are the dealers. Many of those technicians don't give a rats behind.

I don't have actual numbers, but there are plenty of people who had their s*** ****** up by a quick lube place

You jumped on me when you thought I said all dealers were crooks so how can you go and say you think all these places are crap?

Just like there are plenty of people that had their s*** ****** up by a quick lube place, there have been plenty of people who have been hosed by the dealerships....

Lol so where do you recommend having your oil changed. Ive seen every place get flamed on these forums. And please don't bring up doing it yourself.

here's the difference:
quick lube places **** up the job and causes engines to blow up
dealers do the job and rip the customer's head off.... rarely ******* up because they don't hire kids barely out of high school or drop outs with GEDs... OR in a ******* rush to get s*** done in 20 mins like quick lubes do for that matter

sucks either way, but I prefer not to deal with a blown engine

Just bring in your own oil to the dealership. They overcharge on the oil anyway. You'll have receipts where DIY, you wouldn't.

the receipt from when you buy your oil and filter is good enough evidence you did your oil change

Yes, unfortunately for those of us who DIY and don't keep reciepts, you're pretty much ******. I do keep a spreadsheet and get periodic UOA's, but according to my service manager, that still isn't good enough. Total BS, but that's how they want to play it.

A used air filter, regardless of the time will not look like a brand new one. A dealership relies on customer retention to make money, Not to mention about 80% of the money a dealership makes is in service in parts. It wouldnt be wise to screw that up with something as stupid as not replacing a air filter. That would have to be one shady dealership, w/ not only the parts guys, but service and the technicians would know about it as well. No legitimate business would do that.

Sorry haven't been in here for a while to response to this.

I've gone to many dealers were they tell you those two and if you look you still have the old ones in there. The Tech finds them a pain to do sometimes specially the cabinet one. Perfect example was my mothers Murono, givin this is not a mazda dealer but its one of the best rated in the area, The invoice said cabit and air filter replaced. I checked the air filter and the old one was still there. I pointed it out and they quickly fixed the problem, that is the same with many other dealers, ranging from imports to domestic. Again this is from people that are shady, and don't want to really do the work but still get paid.

Show up to the dealer with my mods ???? No thanks.

So dealer is a nogo and quick lube place is a no go. Any other places lol.

Taking it to an actual auto repair facility (not a jiffy lube) may suffice. They typically have ASE-certified mechanics with loads of experience. It is more affordable than a visit to the dealership. It won't void your warranty for having mods. You can also build a rapport with the mechanics at the shop, which is very handy if you don't have a garage or a wide array of tools or auto expertise. Having a mechanic you know you can trust is invaluable.

that's called flat rating... good dealers fire assholes that do that s***

yeah no reputable dealer that cares about staying in business would allow technicians to get away with that.

a local mechanic shop. bring your own oil. tell them to take their time. tip them. if you survive the next 5k miles go back, you just became their customer, and you tip. you are their favorite patron.
