To Cut or Not to Cut??

So i got my H&R springs on, and now there is a nasty clunking noise coming form the front springs.. are supposed to cut the bump stops?? the instructions said no but i always did on other cars ... ??

I'd leave them alone, check and make sure the spring is properly seated..also make sure the bottom tip(end of the spring) is resting against the notch in the strut perch. Wouldn't hurt to double check all the bolts too!!!

O'h yeah one more thing that could cause the noise, the nipple on the top hat needs to be turned towards the back of the strut and inline with the metal fin that goes down into the wheel hub base. That will ensure that the top hat is sitting correctly...kinda hard to explain but you will figure it out after looking at it...good luck!

ya i noticed that too, just got them out, and they are off a little, after more inspection this morning i noticed that while the wheel was off the car i could grab a hold of the spring and shake it, causing the same noise. ! ill give this another try...

They will move some with the car raised, that is normal because of the shorter spring..I had to realign mine the first time because of the top hat alignment was off and making some noise.

I wish I understood this...

the nipple on the top hat Which nipple?needs to be turned towards the back of the strut and inline with the metal fin that goes down into the wheel hub base. That will ensure that the top hat is sitting correctly...kinda hard to explain but you will figure it out after looking at it...good luck!

pictures?

pictures?
I don't have any pic's, the nipple sticks out on the very outer edge of the top hat/strut bushing..or upper strut assembly (it has a couple different names) that mounts to the car. you will see it if you have the strut off the car.

This guy poking out here?

I'm experiencing the same problem. So do you just have to move them around so that they fit correctly? sorry, I was a bit confused.

But don't you have to have the bottom of the spring in a certain position to line up?

I mean, if the bottom is set in place, the top can't be moved right? I'm a bit confused too...

the nipple on the top hat needs to be turned towards the back of the strut and inline with the metal fin Maybe this is where I'm lost. What metal fin? that goes down into the wheel hub base. Ok, let me try to make it easier to understand..The Metal Fin im refering to is at the bottom of the strut that slides down into the wheel hub assembly, it has a hole in it so that the big bolt that you have to remove to get the strut out holds it in place.

And for the other question..yes the springs have to be against the notch in the strut.

In order to adjust the upper strut bushing you have to loosen the nut on top, then you will be able to adjust the nipple so that it is inline with the metal fin at the bottom of the strut, both will be facing the back of the strut (towards the motor) when assembled properly.

JUST REMEMBER TO USE THE SPRING COMPRESSOR TOOLS TO DO THIS!!!!!

Oh, I thought that the little nipple was for lining up the top of the spring.
Nah, its to help you align the upper bushing, you have to make sure the springs and the upper bushing are in the correct position and remain that way when you start to tighten the top nut.
