Tirerack survey vs. Consumer Report

Hi,

I am looking at new tires and found large differences between the rating at Tirerack and Consumer report.

For example, Bridgestone Ecopia 422, ranked No. 2 in Tirerack survey but bottom on consumer report. There are other tines that have similar result.

Which one to believe? I am trying to decide between General RT43, Crosscontact LX20, Firestone Destination LE2. Any thoughts will be great. I am looking for great snow traction and great ride and noise level.

Thanks

I would go with Tire Rack as they do more testing than Consumer Reports!

Did you review in detail what TR and CR tested for? They may have compared different features and regard some as more important than others. ed

I look at both but tend to rely more on Tirerack ratings and surveys. For one thing they represent real-world drivers with different driving styles on different types of vehicles.

There is also a timing issue. Usually TR has ratings of tires before they appear in CR, at which point the models CR is comparing them to could have completely changed.

I especially like with TR has a video comparing 3 or 4 tires or similar type to each other...

Thank you so much for the input. Looks like real survey and test results from tire rack is better. It,s that on some tires the rating are way different when compared.
Thank you

I have no complaints about the Bridgestone s. Mine are 18' and 235's so they are no exactly the same as the OEM's. I feel they are quieter and drive great in the snow. I have appox 15k on them.

I just put the Bridgestone H/L 422 Ecopias (or whatever) on my CX-5 Touring (225/65R17) and so far they are pretty good. I feel bumps and whatnot more but the stock tires were overly compliant in my opinion so it's likely a good trade off.

"ranked No. 2 in Tirerack survey but bottom on consumer report".
A survey is not the same as objective, lab-type testing. Something like a tire is really hard for most people to objectively review. Look at the Tire Rack survey results. The tire got a score of 8 or more (out of 10) in all but ice and deep snow categories - which many in this country could not even rate since we never see those, but only a 7.6 in "would buy again". Surveys are often based on emotion and should not be confused with testing or opinions of professional drivers as opposed to average consumers. I have no idea if this is a good or bad tire, just wanted to point out that Tire Rack survey and Consumer Reports testing are not the same.

Hi,
Thanks for replies.
For Dehlberg123, how did HL422 performed in the snow? Much better, better or somewhat similar to your original tire?

Keep in mind the tire rack surveys are opinion of users, a subjective scale. CR does actual objective testing (tire rack also does this). So don't just go by the tire rack survey.

The Tire-Rack surveys as many have pointed out are just random people's feelings, and the average person isn't very smart when it comes to tires (or most things :)) so I ignore those reviews. The only ones I focus on are actual instrumented testing by Tire-Rack and CR, along with other reputable sources. That's the only real way to compare tires.
