Tire & wheel insurance

When I bought my MS3, I also got a tire & wheel insurance policy from the dealer through Road America. I figured w/ the low profile tires, there was a good chance that I'd be bending a rim. I haven't done that (yet), but I have gotten two screws stuck in the tires in just 1100 miles! The first one only penetrated the rubber, but the second made it all the way through.

The shop just called to say that the puncture is too close to the sidewall to repair. I talked to Road America and they authorized a replacement tire. It'll be about $260 of which $250 will be covered. The policy cost me $400 for five years.

So far, the process of working w/ Road America has been so-so. Twice I was on hold for 10 minutes before being cut off. When I actually got to talk to their people, it was fine. The real test will be how quickly I get the reimbursement check. I'll update you.

I've never been a fan of "insurance" that reimburses you. What if you didn't have an extra $250 that you could spare for a few weeks while waiting for that check? Ouch.

But as you pointed out, at least they did pay out, and in under 30 days, no less.

@Bill - I agree, it would have been better if the insurance would have been paid directly to the garage when the bill was due, but this seems to be a decent second-best.

More generally speaking, since I have almost 5 years left on this policy, I'm pretty sure I'll be making additional claims, so I'm curious to see how responsive they'll be as those claims exceed their earnings from me.
