Tire Wear

My MSP has 7200 miles on it. About 2000 of those are hard driving, the rest is break in/long trips
My stock front tires have about 35% tread left!
That seems like an unusual amount of wear, even for attending 2 autocrosses.
Any thoughts?

And yes, I did rotate the tires this weekend. So I have tread again!

I have 26k miles and my tires are pretty much completely bald or at least REAL close to that. They are very soft tires, which is good for grip but bad for life....

The autoX's prob killed them just as much as the hard driving on the street... sucks but it's an excuse to buy a set just for racing :)

there should be beads in between the tread to gauge tire life...Remove the wheel and look for small 1/4 wide strips going across the treads...They will only be flush if the service limit has been reached...If not they are still sunk down between the tread, and you can use that to determine how much life is left...

An old trick it to use a penny...place the penny in the tread upside down...If ol' lincoln's hair isn't covered, you need new tires...

there are notches between the tread in certain places. once the tread has reached those notches it's time to replace the tires.

uh not sure...Depends on the tire on what the new tread depth is...Most tires you can get about half of the penny in there when new...But not all...

The rubber on the stock tires is incredibly soft. I am constantly prying crap out of mine.
I think the treadwear rating on the Bridgestones is something like 140. My Michelin Pilot Sport tires on my Maxima are 400. You can have good handling tires that last longer than the stock ones.
I'm expecting the Mazda tires to last about 18k miles.

I get free tires at my dealer.. lifetime - as long as i own my msp.

does anyone else got this?

"Tires for Life" - Yeah, I had it. This apparently does not apply if you burn up your tires within 25k miles, however.

I'm thinking about 20k is tire life, with rotation, and "normal" (reasonably hard) driving...

If you live in an area where it snows, running snows in the winter has a nice side effect- your summer tires last a good deal longer.

The Conti's on my wife's SVT Focus still look great after 13k of hard driving because they've split time with a set of Michelin Pilot Alpins.

I was glad to have the Michelins today, it snowed a little here and everything turned to a sheet of ice. There were SUV's crashed everywhere. I just left my MSP in the driveway and she gave me a ride in. No worries!

Ordered a set of Blizzaks on steelies from Tirerack.com this AM for the MSP!

My tires had 9/32" of tread with 3000 miles on the clock. I would imagine that's full tread depth. I don't know what the fully worn tread depth would be.... haven't gotten there. I would guess these tires will last about 25,k if driven sensibly.

Either A. your aligment is seriously out, B. your driving style is more aggressive than you think, or C. your tires are defective.

I would guess a or b in most cases but, I don't know.

i'm pretty proud to wear 'em out that fast... until i see how much new ones are gonna cost me!
