Tinted M5s show me your quarter windows!

Seems most shops around here will not tint to the edge of the Mazda 5's quarter window on the sliding doors. Our 5T is getting done now at the shop the dealer uses. If it looks bad (I think it will) I will pull the window and/or trim and have them do it right. Tinted Mazda 5 owners, how did yours get done? Post up some pics!

They tinted to the edge on my 12Sport. Here's a link to a thread with pictures:

I saw that thread. Your car looks good. I went to pick up the car today, and to my surprise, they did tint the quarter windows past the rubber to the edge. They said it was a pain in the #$@% and would either not try to do it again or charge a lot more. The tint job is so-so, which I was expecting for the price, but the wife seems happy with it so that's good as she's the primary driver of it.

I've tinted these myself. Lot of trial and error but finally figured out the "how" -- grab something like a old calendar and crease it along the inner edge of the outside window. Using a steel ruler, cut as accurate as possible. Multiple cuts for bends. Then use a masking tape and tape the template on top of the tint. Cut it using the ruler along the edge of the template.

I used J&J baby shampoo mixed with distilled water. Wet both sides of tint as you remove the backing and on the window. Here's the trick into not having any areas that's showing visible light -- press the tint underneath the rubber gasket around the window on the inside -- especially where the rubber gasket is curved. Keep spraying the solution until it sets in place.

Pics or it didn't happen!

I too just had my M5 tinted and it doesn't look all that great on the sliding door quarter windows and also the front door quarter windows. Does anyone know how to remove the inside rubber window trim? I gave it a go in the back, but its on there pretty tight. I'd really like to remove it and bring it back to the tinter and have them redo those four windows. I just think it would be easier to tint them without the rubber surrounding the inside.

I haven't looked at it too closely, but a few guys on the tint forums said they actually push out (remove) the sliding door quarter windows to do it right. If you can remove them tinting them yourself would be a breeze. The front door quarter windows don't seem to be much trouble, at least not enough for anyone to mention it.

Are these trouble spots what you guys are talking about?

Not the same car, but same concept, I think. This is on my 6 Wagon, I just had it tinted today. Not happy about these areas, but I understand it's a bad spot to try and get into. The shop said to let it dry some, then bring it back and they'd try to see if they could get the corners to lay down. If not, I'll pull the glass out and let them tint it separately. Usually these pieces are just wedged in between the rubber, but sometimes they're actually a part of the rubber, so taking it out wouldn't be any help. Every car is different though...I've seen my fair share over the years. (I'm a body man. lol)

On the MZ5 there is a window gasket in the way in the upper and lower corner of the sliding door quarter glass. I had the same issue, just a lot worse, on my old Ford Fusion. Most just tinted to the gasket line, which looked really bad. Some pulled the quarter window (remove one screw and it pushes out). Here is the best I've seen so far:

Damn...definitely a skilled craft!

Did yours turn out OK then?

I never did get my Fusion tinted. Should have, as the sun did some hurt to the interior of that car. The MZ5 came out so-so. I don't drive it much so it's not so bad, but when I am in it I just try not to look at the windows but through them. Unfortunately every tinting no-no you hear about is present in our MZ5 if you look for it. I snapped a few phone pics of it today and posted it here:

I wanted to go with another tinter that does a lot of cars on another forum but it was not to be. There is a member here that is scheduled to have him do their MZ5 so if it goes okay he'll get to do my other cars soon.

Well, I had the tint shop re-tint all four quarter windows with them removed. The window removal took me an hour for all four windows. The hardest part was removing the sliding door trim panels. I broke half of the door clips, but new ones are cheap. Other than the clips (which I don't think breakage can be prevented) everything else was easy. The WM/FSM for the 2006 model year was bang on.

I then took the windows gaskets off of the windows and brought the windows in to the tinter. They're currently sitting in a spare bedroom with a dehumidifier to assist with drying. I plan on re-installing the windows in a day or two to ensure the tint has dried so I don't mess it up when installing the gasket.

I hated how the rear quarter windows weren't fully tinted and how I could see light out of the front quarter windows due to the small window size and odd shape (I bet it would be at beatch to tint while installed on the vehicle).

It was a lot of work, but hopefully in the end once the tint dries it will look damn close to perfect. I will snap some pictures and post.
