Timing retarding with Superchip

i don't understand why the AFC wouldn't work in either condition.

Especially considering that most cars the AFC runs on have ECUs that function in both open/closed loop.

In open loop, the AFC would alter sensor voltages, thus fooling the ECU into providing/leaning out fuel.

In closed loop, the AFC would simply monitor injecot voltages to add/remove fuel.

Right?

Whats the big deal?

ps. on this board i understand the consensus to be open loop is the ECU using sensor and closed loop running off a single map.
on the i-club it is understood to be the other way. could anyone clarify for me?

Yes, open loop is when the motor is in WOT, the ECU uses the parameters that the various senosrs give it and does its thing. The S-AFC would be able to alter said signals from the sensors, thus doing its job. In closed loop however, the ECU is completely running off of a table, and nothing else. It watches certain sensors to determine if it needs to switch to open loop, but that is it.

So any signal the S-AFC alters is completely ignored.

The S-AFC supposedly wants a 0-5 volt signal from some senosr, I think the MAF...However, in the Protege, the signal runs 5+ volts on a regular basis. So, the S-AFC would not be able to work.

However, once again, no one has of yet that I know of has one installed and working. Feel free to guinea pig your car for us and report your findings...

Hi StuttersC,
From what I read in the FAQ at Protegetech.com, contrary to what is written above, it seems to imply that the Pro's ECU runs off a table at WOT, and when not at WOT, uses sensor data to manage AF mixture, ignition, etc.

I'm confused now.

from FAQ at Protegetech.com
Are there any ECU (PCM) upgrades for the Proteg?
Piggy back systems are available to wire in to a stock ECU such as an APEXi S-AFC. These systems will not work effectively due to Mazda's ECU designs. At normal partial throttle operations, the AFC units will successfully fool the ECU to supply a different air/fuel mixture. However, at full throttle, the ECU has it's own presets to override whatever input data is sent. The only solution to this is to get a complete aftermarket ECU replacement, such as an Haltech. Which is the ideal ECU for the BPT engine.

The FAQ was written after the newer info, which is what I posted, was available.

There are a number of threads on the other Protege board discussing this very matter. Search over there.

I know what the FAQ says, I've used it extensively for something I've been working on, however portions of it have not been updated with newer info.

Send APEXi an email too, they know the very sutff I am telling you.

But once again, as you can see between the various sources and different info, no one is for sure because no one has acutally taken the time to hook the damn thing up and try it.

Instead of letting the MP3 ECU do its WOT thing, couldn't you modify the throttle position sensor to never go into WOT, and then make a piggy-back do its own "WOT" (notice the quotes) at this newly located "WOT" position? Or am I talking stupidity? :D

Very creative!!
Now let's wait for a knowledgeable person to answer this for us. :D

This is going back a few posts, but the superchip does NOT work for our cars. I spoke with matt in tech at superchip, and he said people call him all the time asking if the ford 2.0L chip will work on their 2.0L ( I was one of the ignorant about a year ago). As we all know, the motors are totally different. And the brits cant help either. Well, they can, but the 2.0L there, while similar, is also not the same, because of emissions/different regulations. Their chips are tuned to meet those regs, so we wouldnt be getting the full bonus of the chip that they use on the Familia.
