car has 125,000 miles mechanic says timing chain and timing valve actuator need to be replaced. is this something a moderately skilled home mechanic can do without special equipment? second part of the question is he also says there is another noise that may be stuck lifter. he is concerned that we would put the money in it replacing a timing chain only to have to tear the engine apart again. any feedback would be appreciated. we like the car but don't have the money to sink into it.

Usually a timing chain will last until the engine needs rebuilding. Why is your mechanic sure it's
the timing chain?

Replacing the timing chain isn't easy because there are lots of parts that need to be removed.
I assume the sp means you have a turbo? if correct it will require removing some turbo parts.
The actuator can be replaced at the same time the chain is replaced. It should be possible to
inspect the lifters while replacing the chain. You will need to remove the cam for the lifter inspection.

Re-assembly will require getting all the parts correctly timed. some special tools will be necessary.
You will also need something to hold the crank when the pulley center bolt is removed and replaced.
Take the timing seriously, get it wrong the engine will not run properly, or it may not run. Incorrect
timing can possibly cause internal engine damage. (Not sure if the 2300 engine is non-interference).

Hope this general information helps. Note, I looked up some of this information in the Mazda 3
workshop manual. I have never replaced a chain in a Mazda 3 so I cannot give detailed
instructions, other than follow the manual.

Doing the timing chain is not a easy job. Just changing out the crank pulley is a 3-4hr job. Like what was said, you have to be 100% on getting the timing correct or the car will not run right or at all. You will need a crank alignment tool to do the job right. I would say this is more of a advanced job to take on.

Is the car running bad or just making noise?
