I still have alot to learn about cars and maybe this is a dumb question, but when i first get in my speed and start driving i am hearing a low ticking coming from under the hood. I dont hear it after a while. I also warm up the car for about 5min before i drive it and you can only hear the tick when i give it gas. Does anyone know what it is? please dont flame just looking for a little help....thanks

ticking? like shaking marbles in a coke can?
its hard to explain but iguess it would be something like that just a more consistant sound that gets louder the more gas i give. its not very loud either.

i believe that's knocking/detonation/pinging. check your spark plugs, find out what they are, what they're gapped at. you might just need to replace them with better/newer spark plugs. of course this is the simplest solution assuming it's the problem. other than that, i'm not sure what to tell you. avoid driving your car for the time being otherwise you'll blow your motor

i had that same ticking noise and it turned out to be a wrist pin, so be carefull man. (time to rebuild the block)

also, what boost are you running? what type of fuel? what are your mods
my car is completely stock and i only run 91 or higher in it. i guess it looks like i'll be heading to the dealership because its still under warrenty. I just didnt want to go in there looking like a dumb ass.

im going to check the plugs after work and just replace them

thanks for all the info!!

All fsde proteges tick. Other than the major causes listed, other causes of the tick can be because of(or a combination): Loose manifold heatshield bolts, just plain loud injectors, too large of a gap between the cam and the lifter's. My guess is the cams. I wouldn't worry about it. I doubt you'll have any problems that will come as a result of it

yay double post for the win!

but yeah, is it an intermittant tick, only at certain RPMs, only under heavy load?

im at work so i cant listen to the sound clips but it just seems to tick at lower rpms i think i am just going to take it in just to be safe its under warranty so what could it hurt appreciate all the help

BACK FROM THE DEAD!!!

This is the best discription i have to what i just started hearing in my car. First, Second, and Third gear at apprx. 3000 RPM's i hear this ticking, but only when i'm holding the gas around this range and higher do i hear it.

New engine too, does anyone hear this on their FS??
I'm nervous now, and i was feeling really good about my car until i started hearing this lol Fak!

I had my engine rebuilt with forged internals and I noticed when i got back that there was a tick as well, I get it at idle mostly but i also get it at sustained speeds. When I fluctuate the throttle it doesnt do it. Asked the guy who rebuilt it and he said it had to do with the lifters and valves( i couldnt tell you what) but he said it was ok. And so far a year and a half with no blown engine so yay...
