ticking time bomb

okay, i'm seriously starting to get paranoid about my car. under light throttle (like barely feathering it) in 1st and 2nd gear, i hear a slight ticking before i hit boost. boost gauge says i'm between 11 and 1" of mercury. this is starting to get me worried. this usually happens after i just start up the car after it sits for 2 hours or is cold already.

can anyone tell me what it is or where it's coming from ? i'm starting to contemplate just returning this car back to stock and trading it in.

this is just another thread that will make people worry about their MSP's.

I LOVE MY MSP........................................................ (wiggle)

haha, i'm not trying to worry anyone, but this has got me concerned.

i love my MSP as well, but i can't stand this paranoia. i miss the days when i could drive my car and not worry about something (wait, did i ever experience that ? maybe..)

when you hit boost the car gets louder so it covers up other noises you hear when not in boost check all your moter mounts and also if you still have the stock cat pipe check the metel bracket connecting the tranny to the j pipe it could be cracked

cars are designed to break, drive it like you stole it..

its probably just your valvetrain tapping becuase the oil isnt viscous enough to completely make it to the top of the engine untill its warm. im pretty sure mine does the same thing, dont think its anything to worry about

snowman4us had similar symptoms, or so it seems.

Check post #20 in this thread:

It might be rod bearings.

sometimes the pvs makes ticking noises.

are the ticks interspersed or it it more of a rattling? if its more of a rattling there is less to worry about as it could be any number of things, from a loose bolt to a heatshield to the IM butterfly valves.

sometimes the pvs makes ticking noises.

whats pvs?

i can barely hear the ticking in 1st and 2nd gear. after that, it's inaudible. but it usually happens after i start up the car. it's a rattling noise, but i'm still not completely sure. i'm gonna try and check it out. thanks everyone

I run stock boost. But I still worry about the damn thing blowing up every day.
Thats why I am starting to put money away for the day it happens. I have learned to live with it.

okay, i haven't had a chance to look under the car. but tonight i went in to my engine bay and listened as i revved the motor.

the only conditions when i can hear the noise is when i apply load/throttle to the engine. i noticed that when i revved and the turbo started spooling, the rattling noise came on a bit. this has lead me to believe that there is something loose in the turbo. now i'm just sad. :(

^ that's when you know your car has some serious problems ahha

seems that the sound is independent of engine temp, but i did notice that it went away after driving for about an hour...

Yes my vote would also be exhaust manifold bolts, seems to be afarily common problem. Had to tighten mine back up twice, even after mazda said they "fixed it". More than likely the ones on the passenger side....dont ask just seems to be the ones that come loose the most. As your car heats up the metal will expand and usually seal the leak. Also keep an eye on your oil leve. If you are a little low, sometimes on cold starts the lifters will tap...hehe just wait till you get more miles on it, mazda lifters are notorious for tapping....
