Hello. A few days ago I took off my front license plate because I was under the assumption that only the rear is required. I was under this assumption because on both my father's vehicles do not have a front plate and he told me that it is not required (not sure if he was issued two or only one). I live in DC but the car is registered in New York. After receiving this ticket I did some research, and it appears that the documents online state that two are required, but I found a petition for only the rear (don't know how old it is or if it got passed). Should I fight this or pay the $50? Should I put the plate back on or place it in my windshield? I do not understand why if both plates are required my father drives without them and never had them on in the first place.

thank you for your advice,
Mike

yeah. I put the plate back on...not worth it to me. I just don't understand why my father has only one plate on both of his cars, never had two, and he's in New York.

DC shouldn't be ticketing you if you have a NY plate on the rear and a front plate isn't required in NY. Front plates aren't required in FL (where my parents are) and they drive all over the country with no issue.

I didn't think that I could get ticketed for that out of state. I am going to fight the ticket by mail-in hearing and whatever comes of it comes of it. it's only $50 that is pretty much out of my control after I send in the hearing. no use stressing over. I am however going to keep the front plate on just to avoid any more instances like this...I just don't want the stress.

I also STILL don't REALLY know the OFFICIAL laws about the plate since I hear and see different things regarding the plates in NY. I know most all of cars have them simply because I think dealers like to just put them on?

I havent run a front plate on any of my cars. Ive never had an issue, and i live in cali...Ive been pulled over and theyve made no mention of it. Its up to the officers discretion if he wants to pull you over for it or cite you on the ticket.

I live in Michigan that does not require a front license plate (thank God), but I drive in Ohio, which does, all the time, and I've never been cited. There's no way I'm putting a front plate on either of my cars unless I move to a state that requires it, which will, hopefully, never happen.

NY requires that you have both plates on the car. I'm pretty sure that even if you are driving in a state that only requires the rear plate that you are bound to the laws of the state that your car is registered in. As far as your father is concerned, there are many people that choose to drive with only the rear plate and never get pulled over. I doubt that you would get pulled over for that alone. I'm guessing that you got pulled over for something else(like speeding) and then they gave you a ticket for the plate.

I wasn't pulled over. My car was parked on the street and returned to a ticket in the whiper blades, but it's okay. I put the plate back on and I've learned my lesson and will be smarter in the future.
