Thumping noise when turning...

2003 Mazda Protege5
Hello and thanks in advance to any advice =]

I have a Mazda 03 Protege5 and it has started to cause some issues now at 65,000mi. I am experiencing a "thumping" noise when I am driving, primarily when turning either left or right. I took it to a shop and questioned to the mechanic that I think it is either the CV joint(s) or the wheel bearings. He says the CV joints look good, but did not cut the boots off to check. I think they are good too, but I am beginning to question it. He did however say that one of my wheel bearings (right front) was "loose" and he replaced it. It did not fix the problem.

My question is, Other than CV joints and wheel bearings, or uneven tire tread, what could cause the car to make a thumping noise while turning? My mechaninc want to take the axle down and look for the cause because he is stumped.

Thanks again for any help/advice. =]

In general, bad wheel bearings "roar" at speed, bad CV joints "click" when turning. Does your car have accident history?

No accident history

Thanks for the tips. =] I am the only owner of this car and so far, I am accident free.

The sound is more like a clicking, and gets louder the sharper I turn. My mechanic did replace the right-front wheel bearing, but it did not fix the issue. He said it was loose, but the left-front was fine. As far as the CV joints, would they fail at 65,000mi typically? Even if the boots are in excellent shape? I know anything is possible. =/

could it be the struts?
had a cranching noice when turning, more soo after warming up the car (driving for a while)
frnt struts
uprs struts

Based on personal experience from last weekend...

My wheel bearing was shot to the point where it wasn't making any howling noise, and it thumped while turning. It was also bad enough that I had almost an inch of play when you grab the rim and tire.

thanks for the input

Thanks for the responses. I appreciate it. I think I am going to take it to another mechanic and see what they say. I am leaning towards the cv joints, as the sound is present even when not turning...though it is faint. I'm just worried it's going to leave me stranded if I don't get it fixed. Or, it's going to break the bank with repair costs.

I don't know much about car repair, but am familiar enough with common problems. Regarding the cv joints, "macklum" is saying that it could be the inner cv joint? I assume there is an outer then. Eiter way, the boot has to be cut off to check it? Could a cv joint be repaired or are they just replaced?

Thanks again everyone for you help. =]

I had this problem one time on a jetta. ha like my grandfather told me yeah its fine till it gets worse and then when it sounds like a monkey with a hammer in your wheel well your screwed. I am pretty that is a replacement only job.

I am having this on the passenger side.
Apparently, my lowered geometry and 25mm wheel spacers may have hastened the demise of my CV joints.
Whats involved in fixing these?

Replace the Drive shaft with a remanufactured one ,that way you replace all the cv joints at once for the cost of approx 1 cv joint installed .

motor mounts, halfshafts, wheel bearings, hubs, blown struts ... all of these are likely culprits

Cost of drive shaft at local NAPA auto parts store:
2.0l '02 P5 Auto
Remanu. $69 plus $64 core charge
New for $88, no core charge.
Brand= Cardone

Midas install estimate $90 for hour plus at ($80/hr)

Brand new, Goin' in tomorrow...

Hey! How did those cam gears and Alt pulley get in there? (angel)

Finally fixed it!

I took my car back to my mechanic and I let him go to town with it. He found the bad bearing. It wasn't a wheel bearing or cv joint, but a support bearing on the right axle. He explained that if it was a rear wheel drive car, it would be called a carrier bearing. (Noise was driving me nuts) Sounds like new again.

Anyway thanks for the help guys. =]
