throttle body

hey guys,

has anyone removed the stock throttle body yet? any idea on how much it can be bored?

also, i noticed that there is the usual coolant hoses running to and from the throttle body, has anyone removed them yet? i did this on my previous car (i live in a climate where the temp doesnt get below 5 deg C in the middle of the coldest winter's night - brisbane australia) and found that this helped the throttle body cooler. hope this will be the same with the MP5.

any thoughts?

I've removed the coolant lines going to my throttle body and havn't had any gains or losses that I can tell no difference in performance either. I bypassed these lines though to feed the water jacket in my turbo :)

I was wondering about throttlebody's too. Anyone konw if there is aftermarket TB's and where to get them, or if they are even worth buying or not? Thanks.

i thought someone a few months back decided that the stock one was big enough....

hahahaha

Not tosound like a broken record or anything but use the search button. So to answer the questions.... Have u seen our throttle bodies????? They are massive for such a litlle engine! There will be no real gains to be had with a larger TB because the one on there is plenty big enough.
Peace,
Zane

I wouldn't say it is huge. While installing the phenolic spacers, I took some time and ported and polished the throttle body and the intake manifold. The gains were very noticeable. Best combo of mods I have done so far. Much snappier throttle response and great top end gains are to be had(not to mention the low end torque from doing the manifold):D
Anyway, I would suggest to anyone with a few hours to give it a shot.

where do you get the phenolic spacers at. also, what did you port and polish of the throttle body and intake manifold can you make a how to

I got the spacers from http://outlaw-engineering.com/Pricing.htm for $106 shipped.
I used a die grinder for the bulk material removal, and a dremel for the smaller stuff and polishing.
It would take a little whille, but I think I could come up with something. Maybe a moderator could get with me and let me know how to go about posting such a thing.

hey guys

first of all to reply to mx3ownzj00 and Yello-MP3, you cant just say the stock TB is big enough. that's just like saying dunlops are good tyres. you have to be specific. the stock TB is big enough for someone who wants a stock P5, i agree with that 100%. i'm not having a go at either of you, but it's just a pet hate of mine when someone says something so general that it's useless information. another pet hate is when someone doesnt back the info up with real data/experience.

once an engine is modified to handle more air or fuel, the TB becomes the bottle neck of the system. an increase in the size of the TB wont be a noticable difference on any car....if that's the only modification, but once you start talking about porting and flowing the head, cams, tubro etc, any increase in the TB will be worth it for power. this is what i am trying to find out. from very very quickly looking at the TB, it appears to be able to handle around 3mm increase. i very very much doubt any more. this is what i'm trying to find out. i did notice a long time ago when i first got my P5 (May 2001) that autoexec did have a TB for sale, but i now cant find it anywhere. if i remember correctly it was a huge increase over stock (must have been a new one not just bored) - somewhere around 8mm i think

anyway, has anyone taken the TB off and done measurements?

btw, thanks chdesign for the views on the coolant lines to the TB

Yes please do a How to...Many people will benefit and save money w/ your knowledge...thanks

No offense taken...

I did leave it a little general but really there are no gains to be had even after u have several other mods. The throttle body is more han big enough to handle a nice turbo set up and like wise a nice N/A set up. "Pro-rally racer Eric Burmeister tested the stock throttle body by modifing (boring/porting) it and also a new bigger throttle body and no real gains were to be had" That comes from the member StuttersC
but it is very true i looked it up. Just do some searches for Throttle Body and read ur heart out u will see what i mean.
Hope that helps,
Zane

that's cool.

anyway this weekend my gf is off somewhere and i have the weekend free, so i'm going to take off the TB and to some measurements and let everyone know my findings.
