Throttle Body Coolant Bypass...

OK, so I was surfing ebay and I came across a coolant bypass for the CX-7 throttle body (TB). They claim that by relocating the stock coolant lines so that they do not run through the TB, you can gain some hp. They claim that the current lines are there to prevent the TB from getting too cold in sub-freezing temperatures. Not a problem for me in S. FL, but has anyone heard of this before? This obviously seems like :bs: , but any inputs from anyone who has seen or tried this before would be appreciated...

I've seen it too and they claim that it will give you 8 more horses. C'mon man, assuming that their claim is true and lab-tested, do you really need those extra 8hp? Are you gonna race everyday? Save your money and protect your car. Mazda can decline warranty if they detect any problem with this coolant bypass.

Trust me, this is more curiousity than anything! I don't intend to purchase. I think I am looking for someone to confirm my suspicion that this is bs and not a good idea. I want to understand all of the mechanics of it though...

Well it's not really BS in the sense that those $10 "tuner chips" on eBay are. I have had the throttle body coolant bypass done on my P5 for a year or two, and even in crazy low temps I haven't had the throttle plate get stuck closed.

It isn't something you need a kit for though.. you need two really tiny hose clamps and 4 caps for the coolant fittings.. use the clamps on the ones attached to the coolant system still, the ones on the throttle body are just to keep crap from getting in the holes.

we did that with our B/D series honda motors. in all reality it made it easier to pull the heads. your TB is gonna get heat soaked to a point anyway so what does it matter?

The TB bypass is a very well known trick that has been around for many years. It isn't BS and it does help maintain temperatures down. I had it done in my 88 Trans Am and my 02 Z28......and now that you guys reminded me, I'll try to do it in the CX-7 too. There is NO negative side effects whatsoever. NONE!

Cooler intake charge=HP

4HP+3HP+6HP= big power later on.......even sweeter if it's free on nearly free!

I did the bypass on my 87 Mustang GT. A little engine tuning, exhaust and a good rear gear net 13.5 sec quarter miles. Every little bit counts !

I too did this mod on my '02 Camaro without a single side effect. In all reality, unless you live in Alaska or northern Canada...perhaps even some of the norther plain states (ND, SD, MN, MT) you really don't need coolant running through your TB. It is there so it won't freeze up but aside from the states I mentioned, you'll never freeze it up since the thermal heat of the engine will keep it warm. Other then that, you're running 160-200 degree liquid through something that would rather be cold. I'll do it to my CX-7.
