I was washing my Cx-9 today and I saw 2 small removable panels on the front bumper. Behind these panels are two forward facing threaded pipe tubes. Any one know what the heck they are for??

Really? huh I was hoping you could thread is some kind of mount to hold a bike rack or something cool. It would be great to have a bike rack in front and a hitch rack in back. Oh well, thanks for the quick response.

For towing when you get stuck in snow or mud, you'll find a tow hitch hook in your hidden rear cargo tray (threaded thick bolt on one end with an eyelet on the other) tow truck driver threads this bolt into the front bumper threads as you described and hooks his wench hook into the eyelet and drags the CX9 out of the mud or snow.

Brucie66 is also right, some people who live in municipalities that mandates front license don't like the license plate dead center covering their grills so aftermarket sellers sell plates that screw into those threads that you mentioned and the license plates are offset either to the passenger or driver sides instead of dead center:

Some people are OCD about their cars and don't like their bumpers getting scratched/ding in crowded street parking and add this crazy thing to cut bumpers of people who can't parallel park :

They also make a tow hook mount for GoPro cameras:

And last but not least, you got the guys who think they're Maverick from Top Gun and think they're flying an F-14 Tomcat and need a red arrow for tow LOL

Wow thanks - i always wondered what thos aluminium rings on the back of civics were for. I will probably just mount a couple of spears on them for when the zombies come.

they just leave them in because they get towed so often, lol.

BMW's usually are missing the cover, because they get removed so often when they get towed.

It's a good idea to check them and remove the rust. I bought my car used and they didn't thread into either hole. Not something you want to screw around with in the middle of a blizzard.

There is also a threaded hook receiver on the rear as well - in case you need a pull backwards out of stuck spot.

I'm guessing you could also use the rear one to give someone else a tug out of a stuck spot as well.
