This is what i want my car to be

I just wanted all my fellow MP3ers to know what i just threw. I saw an old friend of mine tonite. He is a Dodge freak. loves dodge! So any way he has this 1986 dodge omni. Yes you heard me and dodge omni. he told me that he had his turbo set up running good. i hopped in his car and we went out. as we were driving i was hearing his turbo spool up and his blow off valve spitting out air.
All i have to say is that when we got on the high way.....wow he just stopped on the on ram put his seat belt on and took off. He spun 1st 2nd and the begining of 3rd gear. (that how powerful it is) and when the tires finally got hold of the ground good, man my head was pinned to the head rest and in a matter of moments we were doing 135mph. after that he told me that he dynoed his car and it had 280 whp. He said he smoked Vets, WRXs, and most cars that are on the road. THATS WHAT I WANT MY CAR TO BE LIKE!!!!!!!!!!

Man there is nothing like boost!!!!!

yep....we would all like that kind of performance....but we also want it in a stylish BEAUTY like OUR cars are....and not some little shoe box lookin POS that no one would really want to be seen in anyway, no matter how fast it is.

The Omnizon (as we always referred to the cars at the dealership) was an odd bastard child. Born from a marriage of VW & Chrysler, it gave Dodge & Plymouth (RIP) dealers a Rabbit to sell. The turbo versions (remember the SHELBY??) was proof that Chrysler would rise again from the ashes because there were still motorheads working there.

I once owned one of those shelby omni...was a shelby charger with the turbo...love it at the time

I had an 86 Shelby Charger also, I loved the power of that little car. I believe it was only 150 hp, but the way that the boost came on made it feel like so much more. It had enough torque that it would give me a squeak of the tires as I was grabbing fourth, not that there is any benefit to that :p That was my first turbo car, my next car was a 90 Talon Tsi AWD Turbo. I was not really into sport compacts back then, but man if I had those cars now!?!? I am trying to gather the funds to put an SR20DET in my 240SX and buy a turbo set up for the wifes P5. Boost rules!!

yeah i know it's a POS. big time. but see he likes that. he wants his car to look like a normal driving car so that when he pulls up to Vet and somke him. and has there driver of the vet crying all the way home b/c a s*** box on wheels beat him!

That's insane! What does it run the 1/4 in?

he does the 1/4 mile in mid 12's. he also is running 18lbs of boost! he has a new bottom end with fordged pistons and rods. head work that he did himself. He took the intake and cut it in half to smooth out the inside of it and them welded it back together. he made his own turbo header. And for the most part he put together his own turbo system. he toons his own car. all the work he did. that why i give him so much props. B/c he did mosly every thing on his car himself. so think what you might but i think he did a good job and deserve credit for doing all that.

Three thoughts:

1. 135mph in an Omni sounds like a bad idea - just because you can go that fast in that half-a-K-car doesn't mean that you should!

2. I would guess that your MP3 would smoke the Omni in a slalom or any other handling test.

3. Obviously the Omni did not come from the factory that way - what a waste to drop that kind of money into that car.

I don't think so at all :) especially if he did most of his own work on the car. That's a hell of a 'sleeper' if I ever heard of one, and that's the point I imagine. I would laugh my ass off if I saw some Omni / Horizon subcompact peel away from a ZO6 or the like.

My sister used to own one of the few turbocharged Chevy Sprints left on the road. Bought this little red 1987 box from a guy who moved up from CA with his collection of Porsches, Vettes, etc. The little hatch was his daily driver, rear seats never even folded up for sitting. I couldn't believe how frikking fast this 1.0 liter three cylinder was. The intercooler was TOP mounted of all things, with a small hood scoop to bring air in. I have never seen another Sprint like it. Hell, you're lucky to see a Sprint on the road period, or an Omni for that matter.

To me, these kinds of cars rule.

1. You don't know what your talking about.

2. he put Konis all around his hard with hard racing springs so i think it hands pretty well do you? ( psssst just to let you know Konis are the best shocks!)

3. He is not a little kid that went out and bought a turbo kit and had some one else put it on. He did ALL the work on his car HIMSELF. So right there i give him his props.

4. There are people in this world that think we are all morons and fools for dumping SOO much money into a s*** box like a protege.

so it's a matter of what you like. Thats it's! He likes mopor and Dodge. He has a Omni, a Stock turbo mini-Van, and a 1967 big block Challenger RT. so that what he likes. don't knock him for that.

Going 135 mph on the public streets is stupid - for starters. Second - what do you think would have happened in the event of an accident - at that speed - in that car? Does he have a roll cage? A roll bar? A fire system? 5-point harness? An air bag?

I like JRZ myself, but Konis are fine. JRZ Webpage

Very industrious. Well done!

I have put no money (other than actually buying it, gas and oil) into my MP3. But if you mean just buying an MP3 - then, sure. I'm sure there are lots of people driving their mini-vans and Camrys that think I'm a moron for getting my obnoxious yellow car with the stupid wing on the trunk.

so it's a matter of what you like. Thats it's! He likes mopor and Dodge. He has a Omni, a Stock turbo mini-Van, and a 1967 big block Challenger RT. so that what he likes. don't knock him for that.

You're right. It just struck me that maybe a Stealth or a Viper or even a Neon ACR would been a nicer starting point than an Omni - that's all.

Look i'm sorry for going off on you like that but just b/c it's omni people knock it. I think that is wrong. The guy put a s*** load of work into it and it probally cost him about $4000 over a 2 year period. And that with new bottom end, head and intake work, a full custom turbo system made by him. So like a said it thinks it's cool. Not the car i would choose but like i said he gets props from me b/c that car beat a C5 Vete.

Hey - I'm sorry too. I think the idea of an Omni thrashing a Corvette is great. And you know what - if he loves the car - good for him. I'm glad that his project is going so well.

Ya know, this may sound corny, but I am glad to see that you guys did not drag this out into a long drawn out verbal war. I am a member of a few different car forums and I personally cannot stand it when people get into childish arguments over opinions. That is what they are....opinions, everybody is entitled to them and nobody should be condemed (sp?) for having them. I think you guys handled this well and if I was wearing a hat, it would be off to you.

Thanks guys!!

hey, before I bought my pro5, I drove a horizon (omni-clone in plymouth clothing) for about 6 years, and my parents before that since 88. It was a kick-ass little car that you could drive the hell out of. It barely weighed anything, so you could throw it around curves real easy (my passengers hated me, nothing to hold on to) but above 80 (spedo stops at 85) it could get finnicky, especailly with wind.
good luck to your friend and have him keep it up.
