1999 Mazda Protege "Sport20" FS-ZE swap
Yesterday, I was rear ended by a lady in an Intrepid on some wet roads. Not too much damage but it looked like the rear bumper's paint had cracked where it flexed. My rear skirt is loose on the right side, too.

I thought that was bad enough.

Today, the car caught on fire! Apparantly my electrical system shorted out or something because ever since the accident, if I hit a large enough bump the car would shut off for a split second then turn back on. At first I thought it my transmission but I guess not. All the ground wires in my engine bay are burnt to a crisp. The fire spead to my brake lines and fender lining before it was put out.

Great, all this happens to my car after I get my Sport20 front end installed.

damn man that is terrible. your ride was looking so sweet too. good luck w/ getting it back to it's beautiful self. any estimates on damages?

I am really really sorry. I hope you get back up and running soon.

How long is it going to be before this forum starts saying "Proteges are prone to fires" now?

WOW! That's terrible...:( I feel sorry. Is it totalled? Do you have pics of the damage.

I guess when it rains, it pours.

Best of luck to you.

I just got back from the Mazda dealer to take pics and see the damage to my car. I talked to Fred, one of the main technicians. He said the cause of the fire was from the battery shifting back (from the rear-ender) and touching the battery tie down causing a short. The fire spread throughout the entire grounding system. The hood lining, engine wiring harness, both fender lining material under each front wheels, new brake lines - because my STEEL braided brake lines were MELTED in half and more misc parts need to be replaced.

Here are some long awaited pictures:

i dont see how your car is dead. Im sure that what ever happened is repairable.

Sorry about your misfortune by the way.

Thats what you get for turning up the boost and not knowing what you're doing you jack-off!!!

p.s. I know he has an ES. I was just thinking that this is typically when somone makes a stupid comment that doesnt pertain to the actual problem. Sorry dude to hear about your car.

dude, sorry to hear about your misfortune, though the damage does appear to be repairable. I could barely notice the damge on the rear, doesn't look like much, and the wires can be replaced, aswell as all the other parts. Is your insurance gonna cover this. They should since it was that lady in the intrepids fault...hopefully you got her information, right????

Proteges are prone to catching fire for no apparent reason.........

It was a joke, to try to lighten the mood. (not working?) It was suggested that some moron would make that statement, and I just happened to be feeling quite moronic at the time........(cheers)

How in the world did all the wires burn up? There must be fuses to prevent this from happening on our cars. Hope all works out ok for you.

Sounds like Mazda should offer an aluminum replacement for the battery brace. I got the custom one from Gujustud. Sorry to see that happen.
