If you are not inclined to custom tune and are worried about making a tuning mistake that could blow your engine, you may find that Hypertech offers a plug and play tuner with nice power gains and just the basic menu options.
They include adjustment to optimize MAF calibration for each of the popular intakes, adjustment of idle speed, elimination of the power hold back in first and second gears, adjustment of top speed limiter to allow for higher speed rated tires, and most importantly, sensible raising of both boost levels and load limits for a nice bump up in power that will allow you to run 18-19 psi boost target with gradual taper down to about 16 psi at 6,000 rpm. This enables you to get very substantial power gains "under the curve" with greatly increased gains in midrange power and to hold power better out to redline. It is very mod friendly as long as you stay with the stock turbo.
This tuning option does not require a steep learning curve. It is truly plug and play. It takes about 5 minutes to install and can go back to stock tune in about the same time. It will not produce the absolute maximum in power you can get with AP, but it'll get you 95% of that while operating very safely. You just don't hear of zoom, zoom, boom with this tune.
I'm not interested in advanced custom tune mapping and find this to be a very good performance upgrade for guys like me.
