Thin paint

I noticed that a few people here have commented on the Mazda 3 having thin paint. Is this something that affects all Mazdas or is it something specific to the 3 (as they use a new painting system)? I assume people are saying this because they have experienced stone chips on their paintwork. Are "sufferers" getting lots of paint chipping or only a few, how big do they tend to be and where are they likely to be? Anyone know if Volkswagen cars sufffer from the same problem?

Thanks

Awww f*ck me! This is happening w/the 3's also? I'm sorry to be so brusque, it's just that is my major pet peeve w/my Protege5 and I was hoping the 3 didn't have the same problem. I was looking at trading for a 3 somewhere down the road, I guess I will wait longer for it, hopefully by then they will stop being so cheap w/their paint process. I would suggest getting paint protection if they offer it. Also, all I've heard about it is they're making thinner paint for environmental reasons. I dunno.

before I ordered mine from the dealer I asked them about paint protection. they apply a teflon coat over the entire for 200 bucks which is about the same as the 3m scotchlite clear bra. they guarantee your car from weather damage and fading for five years.

I had a chipping problem with the mp3. Funny enough, the msp does not. Maybe just luck? or the 12 coats of mothers :)

yea my p5 looks like someone took a sandblaster to the front(yellow)so the chips stand out

after driving a few kms on the highway i too had some paint chips falling off.. so i think everybody has that problem..

My front bumper is so rough it's disgusting. I'm going to have it repainted at a body shop sometime in the future then get a CF hood and be done with it.

This isn't just a Mazda-wide trend...if you look into a lot of other cars on the market, people will claim similar problems. I don't have the cold hard facts about who uses what process, but just from rubbing elbows with a number of people in similar posts on different forums, it sounds like a lot of manufacturers are using more eco-friendly methods these days resulting in paint that chips more easily.

A clear protection piece would be mandatory for me on a new car these days.

I believe thin paint is the norm on a lot of new cars. My PT Cruiser has thin paint, my nephews Honda Oddesy also has thin paint. His front bumper looked sand blasted not long after he bought it, and that Honda wasn't a cheap econo box. It was over $30,000.
