Thermostat Gasket Leaking

new overheating issues

This following was the old problem now fixed;

1st) overheating issue was thermostat stuck in closed position

2nd) leaking thermostat housing gasket problem as noted below

Thermostat Gasket (WAS) Leaking (NOW FIXED - NEW ISSUE)
I recently replaced my Thermostat because it was stuck in the closed position. (diagnosed by pepboys). I noticed when I took off the housing that there was no gasket there presently.

I then put on the new thermostat and gasket without a hitch. There was a small leak but I was able to tighten it up.

Now a few days later I noticed it was leaking again but this time really bad there at the housing! I tried to tighten it up again but its as tight as I could possibly go.

Three questions now:

1) what does the gasket really do? it looks like its just a shield between the two metal parts. Is this to keep them from merging together/melting?

2) Can I just take off the gasket? (like it was how i found it)

3) OR, IS there a sealant type rubber thing that I should use there to keep the leak back??

Thank you~!

there's no gasket, it's just an o'ring around the thermostat

hmmmm, where am i looking on the FAQ?

When I bought the thermostat at pep boys, they gave me this small thin black thing kind of like a paper plastic thing. Its the same size as the flat surface of the housing and has two screw holes on it. Its designed to fit between the housing and the engine kind of like a washer. Think of it like a piece of cheese between two slices of bread. Isnt this a gasket? so this isnt needed?

Thanks!!

So i replaced thermostat etc all good there. BUT....
Now its still getting really really hot ( but no longer overheating like it was). I think the fans are not coming on. Where are the fuses or relays located at? what are the few things I can check to see if this is the problem? (radiator cooling fans). Shouldnt the fan come on shortly after the car is started?
I dont see either of them turning on at all now....

Im going crazy with this.

Thanks!

The fans should come on after the car is warmed up (probably 212*F).

If you want to test your fan circuit, unplug the 2-wire coolant temp sensor by the airbox.
If it comes on, then your relays, etc, are fine.

If not, then start testing the circuits.

BTW, there should also be fuses for the cooling fans, too.
