The "What mods for a daily driven MSP?" Guide Thread

Look after the throttle body, there is a 2" long tube forming a "u". Plug the AFC and boost gauge on that one.
For the bov, I heard you can use the brake booster line but I used the vaccum line for the oem bpv.
For the mbc, I say get an ebc. My 2 cents! ;)

thanks, and for the ebc, i was thinking about getting one, but then shied away and gave this a shot, hopefully it works well, i can always upgrade, luckily the mbc wasn't very expensive

If nobody minds helping me out on this. The bug for modding my car is still annoying me, so I wanted to know what else I should put on to get give me the peace of mind and the mod bug off DEEZ NUTS

Currently my setup is
-Custom SMIC
-Weapon R hardpipes w/ turbohoses couplers and better T-clamps
-SS AFC v2
-Injen SRI intake
-Dual BOV/BPV Set up (tial bov w/ stock bpv)
-6000k Hids
-Autometer Boost gauge (want to get rid of cuz its not amber)

What I currently have and will be installing in the near future
- Medieval Front and Rear MM
- AWR Side mounts
- AEM UGO Wideband

What I am currently in the process of buying
- Vibrant Exhaust (w/ cs exhaust hangers)
- Either CS Downpipe or a Custom downpipe (dont know how many in to go if i do custom I am thinking 2.5)

I think everyone should turn up the boost. Don't hold me responsible but i have been running about 14lbs for 2 and half three years. My rings spun after all that and thats it. I just don't understand how people keep throwing rods.(uhm)

I am new here and need some advice on modifications.

I plan on getting a MSP soon. I am not too knowledgable when it comes to turbocharging, but I want to be.
I planned on my first modifications being front/back sway bars, Injen Cold Air Intake, and an Exhaust System. Maybe HKS. And I plan on upgrading the intercooler.

Stock the MSP is supposed to be 170HP, but some people dynoed it to be around 152HP.

I am looking to get 250HP and make the handling even better. 250HP is more than enough for me since I now have a 96 Protege making around 80HP on the dyno.

How much power can I expect from the Intake and Exhaust?
Do I need to make any modifications for 8psi of boost or is that safe on stock? I eventually plan on 10 psi, but that is for when I get a higher paying job.
Do I need any other modifications before the Intake an Exhaust, or I can just install them with no problems?
What is the stock tire size? Give me the tire speed rating too please.
Last question. Does this car have a speed limiter or will it reach a higher speed with my modifications?

Stock tire size is 215/45ZR17, Z rated tires. Racing Beat sway bars front and rear are more than adequate for most handling challenges. Intake and exhaust can be installed without any other needed items. But depending on the type and weight of the choosen exhaust you might want to get some Corksport exhaust hangers to secure it better. Power gain depends on which exhaust and how extensive it is. Turbo back versus joint pipe back. The latter will gain the most and cost the most. Intake gain is minimal at best. Panel filter is best bang for the buck in that area.

Upgraded intercooler, exhaust and SS AFC make the car much more enjoyable to drive even at 6.9 psi of boost.

To add onto this, my personal opinion is, if you want to run 8psi, i highely sugest copying, or following my list of mods.. i was in your spot about 5months ago, and i found that the mods that i have made (power related) have been perfect, and they all support each other so that i don't have to worry about anything, if you do decide to run 10psi, you should prob. get a FMIC, but you can worry about that later

I noticed that there are 2 things you can do for modding your car slightly, if you want to get an all around upgrade and power gain then i would go with the full package mostly, (such as most of the mods in this thread/and/or power related modes as i said in my sig.) or you can just go with what BOOSTR said and that makes the car much more fun to drive, and gives it a good small amount of a power gain, for exhaust i would really suggest getting the CS hangers because its really, really annoying when they bang around, and another add that i personally loved as an upgrade was the CS shifter bushings.. mainly because they took like 5min to install, and it made shifting soooo much more fun to drive.as far as an HKS which if im correct in assuming that its a HKS BOV you want, than im not too sure how to do that without hardpipes, but i personally hate the look of the plastic ones.. but like i said its up to you.. if you do get hardpipes my personal experience was to NOT get WeaponR hardpipes, i originally bought them because they looked fine and were nice and cheap.. don't get me wrong im NOT knocking the pipes.. but im saying that the couplers are a joke and make the car un-drivable in boost, without a good chance of them popping off.. soo, if you do get hardpipes i would look at one of the other products.. only because when you end up buying silicone couplers and T-bolt clamps that you'll have spent more money that if you had just gotten other ones in the first place

With all that said the car is a lot of fun, and very nice to have as it is a rare car and the ladies like it lol... and as far as your HP goals thats what mine were about too.. and id.. not 250whp but 250HP which is around 200whp.. give or take some.. if your looking for 250whp.. your gonna need a good deal more, and a lot more research.... im no expert to say the least, im still very new to the car.. but from what i have learned(which is a huge amount i think) this is what i would suggest.. so have fun!.. and once you start. you wont stop, lol i thought id be done once i got my list set, but now im looking for other upgrades for next summer when i get more money.. hehe

edit: also if you do get an ss afc and have ANY thoughts of tuning it (which i am pretty sure you might, at least i do now, after first thinking i wasnt) that you get a Wideband sensor, that and a boostgauge are perfect with the pilarpod.. hope this helps

Thanks, good info, but what are AFC's i keep hearing about?

What is the difference between a Blow-off valve and by-pass valve?
What is better? What do they do exactly?

I meant 250HP, which I guess like you said, is around 200whp.

I meant an HKS Turbo Back Exhaust System. I have seen them on youtube.

OO ok, well first off, the AFC's are piggy-back systems that hook up to your stock ECU(comp.) and it is really helpful for getting the car to drive muchh, much smoother, and they allow you to play around with the air-fuel mixtures because as of stock.. the cars run really, really rich which is why, as everyone has said on threads, that if you mash your gas you dont really get that power for a few sec, until your rmps catch up with your fuel being dumped into it..(roughly), they are great because once you lean out some of that fuel, you can get the immediate power boost when stepping on the gas if you tune it right (aka, with wideband.. should get one, they are worth it by far)

-BPV is what you have in there stock, its basically the same things as a BOV, but the BOV's usually vent to the atmosphere, unless you recirculate them, they both vent off the air that is pushed back into the turbo when your throttle-body closes (the plate that lets in air when you accelerate.. very general description, connects to the cold-pipe incase you didn't know like i had for a lil bit lol)
and if this air isn't vented it pushes air back into the spinning turbo which screws it up over time, so, if you look at http://www.mazdas247.com/forum/showthread.php?t=40956 you can find all you need to know about that, i suggest reading it, if not all of it, great info.

Other than that, i haven't heard of an HKS exhaust, but im sure they are pretty good, turbo-back is always good as far as more power.. um, ya get the corksport hangers with them as said b4.. andd that's about it! The more you read about stuff the easier it becomes.. might take a while to get through some info, but its cool to know that you actually learn a lot with all this info, and how it makes so much more sense lol-gl
-also i noticed that b4 when you said that they are 170hp and dynoed at 150ish.. the 150ish is the whp, so its still 170hp, unless they did it at the flywheel which i dono who actually does that.. but ya just fyi i guess

HKS makes a great sounding muffler, not sure if they have an MSP turboback kit though. You could always go custom piping with an HKS canister. BPV & BOV serve the same function, some people just like the pssst-pssst sound of a BOV. BPV just does its job quietly. There's plenty of information on this site as the car has been out for a while now and how to modify them is not a mystery. Just do a search and ask questions if you need help.

there the same, mostly what i really mean is they server the same function, but a Bov is what you can add to the stock BPV, to help the bpv vent more air, go to that forum on killing your turkey that i had posted before and they get into it somewhere through those pages, the BPV can vent all of the air but you need to alter the inlet/outlet sizes, so like where the injen pipe hooks to the bpv, and to the hotpipe needs to be larger, but it is usually easier i think and sounds better to some people if you just add a BOV and you just keep your stock bpv setup the same, so they both vent the air needed together

How do I know if my stock BPV is leaking? I'm a new owner of the car, and I dont know if it has ever been replaced.

Buying parts on protege garage and corksport.

Is it possible to spend less than $6,000 on mods and get at least 300HP.
If yes, how much $$ do you think it would take to get 300HP.

I know I would need forged rods and pistons($1700) and $800 exhaust system(has to be with cats), $300 Injen CAI, $800 Corksport Intercooler, engine mounts, hangers for exhaust, and increasing psi to 10psi, but would all that give me 300HP?

based on your description no. 10psi will not get you even close to 300whp. and anything over 275 seems to be the achillies heel of the tranny. so expect to spend another 3k+ on making the tranny hold well (im guessing on the cost, but youll need a clutch for sure and the gears arent going to hold). You also dont have engine management in there, thats a must.

id say go for 250whp, you will be under the trannys breaking threshold, you can still use the power on the road (most of it at least) and you wont be fixing things every week, cause the cars not made to hold 250 let alone 300.

If u want to go into detail, since thats way out of the scope of this thread just PM me and ill let you know what you need as a minimum for whatever goal.

Okay, I would install a new, better LSD, get a stage 2 clutch, engine mounts to protect engine, forged engine internals for higher boost, waste gate actuator and intercooler for better reliability, Injen CAI for cooler air and more reliability, exhaust hangars for exhaust reliability, thunder manifold for power, exhaust system with cats so I can legally drive it. I was also going to get a GReddy boost controller with e-manage.
All of the supporting mods will protect other parts and each other so I am not worried about any parts breaking with everything replaced with stonger parts.
And I would get the upgraded turbo GT something on protegegarage.com which is said to be able to handle 350HP.
Looking for a 0-60 time of around 5 seconds. Has to be faster than MS3 and 350z. Give me an estimate of how much power I need for that.

Just wanted to list my mods which I've now included in my mod list on my sig since I'm always being asked about them. I actually had to think about everything I've done in the last couple of years - the list keeps getting longer and I keep getting more forgetful as I age.... youngins'... don't laugh damnit. :p

Crowder rods, CP Pistons & rings, ARP studs & bolts, Cometic headgasket, GT-28RS, Haltech E6X, 440cc Bosch injectors, Walbro fuel pump, Perrin fuel rail, MAM stainless steel tubular manifold, CSF Radiator, MAM FMIC & hard pipes & SRI, GHL stainless steel 'S' pipe & full catless 3" exhaust system, HKS SSBOV, TurboXS MBC, ACT heavy duty plate & street racing disc, Quaife LSD.

I've also got some exterior, interior, wheels/tires mods, but meh, I like my performance ones better.
