The Ohio Random Thread... aka We Should Probably Be Working

Figured I would post this in here as well to see if you guys had any suggestions for my PS pump failures.
Let my buddy co-drive the MSP with me today and blew another PS pump. I don't think it likes spinning and pushing fluid while the motor is around 6,000RPM's. 3rd pump this year that I've blown the sensor out and shot fluid out of. Appearently the PS pump is a bigger problem to me than the FS motor. Ran my best time with 3 other people in the car. Was a blast, but didn't get to run my 5th run because of the PS pump failure.

I'm assuming since you auto cross you can't just depower the rack? I haven't heard of any PS issues other than Miata guys blowing theirs when they installed super angle inner tie rods (which is why I depowered mine when I installed them).

I think the local guy that auto crosses his turbo sky was overheating his PS but I can't remember how he fixed it....

I'm pretty sure that is what is happening, because you can A) smell it and B) it get to the point were the pump locks up and turns the color of the ps fluid.

is your fmic blocking the ps "cooler"? You could switch to a setup like Evan is doing on his but you have to lose the windshield washer bottle thingy

I didn't think about that, but would it really block that much air to stop it from cooling at all. It is getting beyond hot.

The factory PS cooler is what... a foot long piece of bent tubing with a canister on it? Good enough for daily driving and track use (no rapid steering changes in comparison to auto-x), but I've heard of many cars cooking their PS fluid on a few runs. Especially if they are quick back to back to back.

I think Nate and Phen might be right. Your large intercooler and radiator may be blocking the stock cooling hard line and cooking your fluid. I relocated my cooler but haven't run it since it's been in so I can't give you advice on how well it does/doesn't work yet.

I have a very similar setup to Evan.. and still have my factory washer fluid bottle and the fluid in the PS still looks like brand new. Sure its not autoxed as much as Corey but i have not cooked a pump yet.

Yesterday I changed the plugs and wires on the truck, messed up two wires so I was running on 4 cylinders for a while (attention)

Also cleaned the K&N filter and cut the box for better flow, applied too much oil so it took forever to clean it. Truck runs much better now, not that it wasn't running fine before. Also found out the ebrake doesn't do jack...

Do you have a pic of your setu? I no longer have the fluid bottle, so that isn't a biggie for me.
