The Ohio Random Thread... aka We Should Probably Be Working

What ended up happening to it?

BOOM - FREAKIN' - BOOM!, rod #2 snapped coming back from Mazdafest '08, I have since found out that the Standback wasn't doing s*** so most likely it ran lean for a LONG time, off course my right foot didn't help...

got a great deal at the dealer, they gave me 10k as a trade it "as it is" since they owner loved what i had done to it, it was worth 14k according to KBB and Mazda wanted 9.5k for a new engine. Unfortunately I had dumped over 9k on it at that point so my best option was taking the trade in value and get the one I have now.

Now I'll have nightmares after seeing those pics. Ouch, I'm sorry!

yeah well, whatcha gonna do. i miss the damn car but i also learned a lot. too bad it wasn't cheap. I would only stick to what i mentioned before, especially the DPTune (they're the ones that flash the Speed3 for SPEEDSOURCE... one of the things I learned @ VIR).

I'm really enjoying me sedan though, lighter and handles better. working on it little by little, it'll end up a really fun car to drive down the road.

This might be dumb (or you might not know), but can DP tune the Cobb Accessport, or Standback tuning only? Also, where are they located?

Your 3 sedan is pretty nice, and I'm sure it has a lot of advantages over the MS3, especially in reliability, weight/handling, and cheaper costs. After learning more about the limitations on power in FWD 3's, the MS3 seems kind of pointless at this point...Already nearing its max. I mean, I knew it would never be a 700hp monster, but I at least thought I would have this car until the day I die--it would be a career build and end up being a massive thing, not just "oh, it's done, there's nothing more I can do." It's like the one thing in my life I wanted to keep and treasure. Anyways, I'll be sure to ask you for help as I need it. I never knew you had a MS3 before...Thanks!

That's one of the things that kinda turned me off about it. I mean it's already blisteringly fast in my book (it's all relative, haha), but with boltons, the stock motor is about pushed to the limits. From what I read, the stock internals were good for about 350hp, I think at the wheels. It's been a while since I was researching it. That's a ton, but I dunno that I'd want that in a fwd. I don't like the look of the little CRX hatches with the slicks poking out in the front.

If you want something that will be a career build, get something bullet proof that's already withstood the test of time: 4G63, SR20, KA24, 2JZ, 1GZ, RB25/26, etc, etc. Your wallet is the only limit, really. I love Mazda, but their motors aren't quite up to snuff with their suspension.

Ahem... BP and B6. Sure, they're smaller engines, but they take a beating and a half.

don't forget 350 chevy or varients of, also very very cheap to make power and many choices in body styles.

You know why Summit Racing sells a bunch of small block Chevy stuff? Because htey need all they help they can get.

That's absolutely true, and I love my B6 and can't wait for a big boy BP, but they don't put out quite the same numbers.. like 4 digit hp numbers. Apparently the unofficial record (as told by google) for highest output BP is 550whp in an Escort GT. I'd go so far as to say that they're one of the best motors that Mazda has made.

DP has their own solution, they reflash your ECU instead of using a piggyback like the standback. It has better capabilities than the AP but you don't get a device to plug in. You would end up sending them your ECU a few times to "fine tune it", it would be better to drive there and have him do it in one day on his dyno. He's in Texas, he has said he would come up to do some tuning but i assume the client (we) wold have to pay for it, might be worth it if there are a few people involved. I might go down early Dec to have mine tuned once I get the header, it will give me good power (mostly gain 30 torques throughout the whole curve) while I get enough money for a stand alone and some internal mods, that's gonna take a while. The biggest benefit from his tune is opening the throttle 100% and eliminating the delay of the drive by wire when you go full throttle.

Maybe in the US. Corksport pulled 500 out of their BP that is in an early 3rd gen Protege. The Puerto Ricans are pulling 700+ hp out of some of their 1g Proteges.

I said unofficial because I looked for only a few mins on Google. Puerto Ricans are always a different story, they're like friggin import drag racing gods.. All of the fastest cars that I can think of come from there, barring the WOTM Supra, or Smokey Nagata's works of art.

Sean has had our ecu tuned by dp tune...its not perfect right now (would be best if we'd drive to him)...but the stupid standback NEVER worked for us and I think we tried it twice...we will probably send our ecu back at some point for more fine tuning but we need to pick a time when we can be without it for a few days

Tortuga...I remember when your car went boom...the pics made me want to cry...

I agree, IMO having more than 300hp in a FWD car is kinda pointless. That's why I don't plan on doing too much in the power department. It's already fast enough for me, so I want to focus on the sound and mostly handling. Better suspension and sticky tires will go a longggg way on this car.

for the protege, i'm thinkin 200 whp would be the max.

Man it's really nice outside.

more personally, given my budget (stock internals are my budget). I know they can make more power but for reliablity, drivability and a small budget, I"m not sure i would want or need more than that for a dd and sometimes track or autocross car. I have a blast with the power now (only have a CAI & cs 80 mm exhaust) and kept up with the ms3 in front of me pretty good on the fun run. I'm guessing i'm in the 140ish - 150ish whp range so adding another 50ish i feel will give me exactly the car i want. (unless i go boom, then it's disco potato time)
