The Ohio Random Thread... aka We Should Probably Be Working

What you got?

on the car now:

- harness bar
- Will's old suspension: Koni yellows, GC sleeves and springs, FCM top hats and bump stops

waiting to be done:

- alignment
- competition motor mounts (have had them for a while)
- Hydra (standalone) + 550 injectors
- driver harness

waiting for shipment\delivery:

- Hydra base map (for my car, have POs but won't work very well)
- frog arms
- seat bracket
- seat (driver; once this is on stock seats will be sold so I can get the other one)

Including all of this, and not including oil changes, filters, spark plugs, wipers, etc I have $6.8K on the car... (eek)

yeah... that's my dream Eurotrip right there

Very happy about it, but I'll still have the slowest speed car of the group... in a straight line

I was saving for a down payment for a house or condo, but after talking to my sister this weekend and doing some thinking I decided to not buy a place and spend the money on the car.

I put the main parts in on my wallet but now I have been selling old parts for more than I pay for the next parts I need. Been kinda nice but this next step is going to cost me

I can't believe we are talking prices on here. No one should ever add it up lol. When I laid the CBR down for the final time and sold it for cheap, I later figured out I lost 7k on that bike. That I bought for under 5k.

THE FEELS.

Remember when I asked you right when I first met you? I think to get that dp. You said 8500 then....

Alsooooo I love it already

you love me, don't lie to yourself. Also They are popping up all over for cheap. Sell the dashhawk and the ap and you can make money lol

Okay so question, since you want heat to dissipate from the brakes. Isn't paint an insulator? Is that why the paint of my brakes boiled while at Mid Ohio? I am going to blast the paint off my my calipers that is on there now and leave them bare. Figured it would be something interesting to talk about as its a detail thing most car enthusiasts do

The paint on the caliper would not cause overheating, since the entire braking system including the rotors, pads and the caliper are all used to cooling and heat dissipation. Combined with vents in the wheel well to help direct airflow, and you have more than just one way of dissipating heat. Your paint probably boiled because the conditions at Mid-Ohio were way above any conditions your car experienced before (on street or small auto-x).

I can only imagine following:

1) Paint wasn't as high-temp as advertised.
2) The coat was too thin
3) Paint never cured fully for some reasons, humidity or wrong temperature
4) bunch of other things :)

oh yea I have no doubt that I pushed the limits of the paint but still I was thinking that it could not help with heat. I guess the paint on the calipers isn't going to make a huge difference

I'll start with saying I don't know a lot about brakes....

Isn't the point of cooling brakes really keeping the rotor (and pads?) cool? That's why ducts on racecars go to the rotors. I wouldn't think the caliper itself would play any major role in keeping the brakes cool and paint wouldn't really effect anything. I remember the Sahlen's cars having calipers with paint (probably powder coating) on thier calipers on the RX-8's.

Your brakes overheated because of the silly Mazdaspeed stickers. :D

Sheesh, just went through my build thread and added it all up. Yep, could've paid off the car by now ($8945 spent and I bought it from Jake for $8200) FML. But it was worth it! She may be ugly as sin but she sure is a hoot to drive!

Someone had me go through and after this winter with buying stuff I know I will need I will be at 9600ish 2/3s what I paid for the car lol. So worth it though

And I guess so but I know I need more heat resistant pads but I was still curious.

LOL I'm not even going to compare what I've spent on parts compared to the purchase price of BOTH of my RX-7's. Probably going on 5X by now...

I know I "lost" money on the MSP, but I also had it for 7 1/2 years (with about 6 of that drivable) so still cheaper than a rental car and a lot more fun than a 2000 Monte Carlo SS to drive.

Speaking of brakes, what is a good way to determine the right brake size needed? Is it some sort of power/weight ratio that gives manufacturers what size to use?

For ex.
The 2014 Mazda 3i has 155hp, 148 tq and (sedan auto) weighs 2848 lbs
2014 Mazda 3s 184hp, 185tq and (sedan auto) weighs 2982 lbs
They have the same size rear rotor but the s had a slightly larger (.59 inches) front rotor.

If the brake fluid is boiling or exceeding its rated temp then you need to worry about caliper temp. Otherwise you should mainly be concerned about cooling off the rotors.
