The Ohio Random Thread... aka We Should Probably Be Working

My wife refuses to learn. She always says that she has no desire to learn even though I keep telling her that it would be helpful since 66% of the cars we have are manual...

I'm not trying to sound sexist or anything, but why does it usually seem like a woman thing? Why wouldn't they want to learn? I don't get it?

Because then it's harder to apply makeup and talk on the phone while driving?

I think it's an American thing more than just a female thing. I'm fairly certain that manuals are more common in Europe.

Why don't people want to learn how to drive a manual?

ftfy.
In my experience, the only people who drive manuals are people who LEARNED on a manual. Everyone else could care less. Male, Female, doesn't matter. What percentage of new cars do you think are sold as true, 3-pedal manuals? I'd venture a conservative guess that it's 1% or less. Honestly, probably a lot less. Most people in the US that aren't brought up on a manual won't and don't care to learn.

My wife learned on a manual and loves driving them. So did my previous long term girlfriend, now that I think about it. Jen (wife) had a Sentra before our 5-spd VW, and my ex had 5-spd Civic, and a 5-spd Ford / Mercury Tracer (basically a 1st gen Protege with a s*** ass engine).

Thinking further on this, maybe y'all just need to find better girls (peep)

:p

^that makes alot of sense. I was forced to have an auto for my first car but drove my friends manual whenever I got the chance.

But I think guys are much more open and/or want to learn to drive manual than women. It seems most women won't even consider the idea of driving/owning a manual. Of course there are the exceptions like Lauri, Linda, Tessa, etc. Just making an observation.

I've taught a few GF's to drive manual but I think it's because they wanted to feel "closer" to me and my interests, not their own.

Again- not trying to start a man vs woman fight here. :)

Lulz. Does Sanja (I finally spelled it right) know how to drive a manual?

My mum said pretty much all the cars in Israel, Palestine, Jordan, Egypt etc are manual.

Yep, she actually drove half of our solo fun-run through Amish country and loved it. I got to sit in the passenger seat and look at the stupid map for 2 hours :(

Not sure if its true, but my high school biology teacher came from england and she said that they jad to take their drivers tests in a manual car.

My mom can drive a manual, but shes so short (4'9") that she cant drive most cars here without being too close to the airbag.

That's what my wife says. And I did try to teach her like five years ago, but she freaked out when she stalled it. Hasn't tried since.

My wife gave up on learning because the 6's clutch was too heavy. Then later, she tried on the 7, and that's tricky because its rotary. She finally learned when we bought her the saturn, which was manual. She could do it, but she was nervous. She just needed time to practice, now she drives manual just fine, and actually finds it fun. She still refuses to touch the 7 though.

Honestly, WHY learn how to drive a manual?? Like amaff said, automatic cars are more than plentiful, so there's absolutely no reason for anyone to ever learn how to drive stick. People learn how to drive manuals, and continue to drive them out of desire, not necessity IMO. Obviously short of being given your first car and it happens to be manual, so you better learn how to drive it, or some instance like that. lol Like my 52 year old Mom says "Why do I need to know how to drive a stick? I'll just buy automatic cars"

I learned when I was driving with my temps, in my dad's 98 S-10. Then I bought a manual truck to drive when I got my license because I liked it so much. lol

Because the wife and I always take my car, and if I'm injured or dying, she needs to know how to drive my ass to the hospital.

My parents when I was in high school would not allow me to buy a car that was stick, because neither of them can drive one for more than 2 blocks. I learned on my buddies 4cyl fox body mustang whenever I had the chance. Good times.

Three of my friends just kept telling me that they don't feel like they have "control" of the car in an automatic. And every car I looked at was stick so I had to learn to have the car I wanted. Now I know what they are talking about, I had to drive a G6 to school one day because my car was laid up and it was dreadful, absolutely awful and I hated the thing I just had to keep pressing on the gas until it violently lurched forward. I love driving manual (had to rephrase that to discourage crude comments) and I could not imagine going back unless the thing had a lot of horsepower.
Also my girlfriend knows how to drive stick, she loved driving my civic because it was easy and is not a fan of driving the speed, but she likes it because it sound like a "space ship" when I get into it.

I agree 100%! Every time I drive my wife's car it's in too high of a gear getting on the highway and does that awful downshift lurch thing.

Side note: I heard from my Subaru salesman yesterday... My STi's ETA is January 17th. Looks like I'll be getting rid of the MS3 a little sooner than I thought :( But I can wait to get my hands on the new car :)

Does this mean a part out on the MS3?
