The Ohio Auto-X and Track Event chat thread

Jake has them, don't remember the size (18 or 17) but I believe they're 9 wide

Ya they're 9" wide according to the site. I think I'm going to get those. Can't beat that price.

Also, I just got an email from NEOhio SCCA and they posted the results http://neohio-scca.org/solo/solo-results/

I can't believe how close Patrick and I were. He was only behind me by 0.066 seconds!

8" wheels are kinda an odd size unless you are on 225, but I personally think a 225 fits great on a 7.5" IMO Just go with the 9' if they are only 2mm out further. Will your clearance from the suspension be fine?

I think the suspension clearance should be fine since Jake is running the same wheels. I'll double check with him just to be sure. The Hoosier tires Marlon might sell me if I buy 17" wheels are 235/40/17. So those should be good for 8"-9" wide wheels.

SO what's the benefit to running a 17x9 to a 17x8 if you're still using 235/40-17 tires?

They rubbed on his front coilovers. You will need spacers in the front

Ya I texted him about it and he said he's running 10mm spacers in the front. I actually have 4 JBR 5mm spacers (bought for winter wheels and when we got that Mid-Ohio discount). I asked about running 5mm in the front and he said they may fit my different coilovers. Would there be any safety issues with running 2 5mm spacers for each front wheel? That would mimic running a 10mm spacer.

Probably nothing right now. I was looking for 17x8 wheels, but Will posted that link to the 17x9 wheels and that price ($580 shipped) is too good to pass up. I tried looking on craigslist and different forums for 17x8 wheels. I couldn't really find any and the few USED wheels I did find were way to expensive.

However, it would give me the option to run wider tires in the future.

In the Protege world 8mm was the most you should "safely" run. I would get some ARP extended lugs if you'll be running 10mm spacers since you'll be auto-x'ing. I've got 5mm spacers all around right now and I still want extended lugs.

That's what I'm concerned about. I remember reading somewhere that if you go more than either a 5mm or a 10mm spacer, you'll need extended studs. Can't remember what size they said though. I've looked into replacing my studs anyway in the past, but I'll need to buy a new set of lug nuts (probably need open ended).

There will be a performance advantage with 9's over 8's with the 235 tire. I picked a random R-compound 235/40/R17 tire on TireRack (BFG R-1) and the listed tread width is 9.5". The general rule of thumb is to run a wheel width close to the actual tread width of the tire.

The more wheel width (up to the point where you are stretching the tire) you have the greater performance advantage there is to be had due to the extra tread surface that gets put to the road when using the wider wheel. I didn't even mention the extra sidewall stiffness that will be gained which will translate to steering feel and turn in response.

Check this out for a little more information on how the wheel width effects the tire: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tiretech/techpage.jsp?techid=198&

Thanks for the explanation, Will. That makes perfect sense. Looks like we'll all be getting those TireRack wheels. Haha. Any reviews of them on track? I doubt you would recommend them if they were failing.

Not only was I the slowest (we knew that would be the case) I also had the most OFFs. So, I win!

I've never heard anything bad about them, honestly. Cheap and fairly light. You really can't go wrong. (Except that gray color is kinda bad.)

Since I don't have actual 10mm spacers, would there be any safety issues running 2 5mm spacers (mimics the size of 1 10mm spacer)?

I generally feel that running spacers isn't the best idea. Although, I don't see why 2 5mm would be any worse than 1 10 mm. They both have the same effect.

I would Plastidip (it peels right off!) my track wheels a bright color anyway.

And I don't see why two 5mm spacers would be a problem. The only problem I do foresee is getting the outer 5mm spacer aligned correctly to the hub. My 5mm spacers juuuuust barely stay in place on the hub ring before mounting the wheel.

Dang it. Why am I always broke? Will, to the vault for a loan?
