The Ohio Auto-X and Track Event chat thread

That works. I'd post your questions in here though. I have the rules of the ST classes pretty much memorized but anything higher than that I don't really know without looking. Corey runs his MSP in SMF so he'd be able to tell you about the higher modified classes.

But remember, if the rules don't say you can do it, you can't do it.

Unless you are in SMF and then there are some instances that are determined by what people think is race car and what people think as street. I'm pretty sure, if your sig parts are updated and you are running stock boost, you'll be in a street class. I don't remember if the MSP is in STX or STU with the rule changes over the last couple of years. I use to run STX until I went FMIC and Rcomps. But as soon as you have a aftermarket intercooler it puts you in SMF of SM if you want to race against RWD cars that came factory with back seats and AWD that can factory with back seats. I'm in SMF and basically anything goes for motor, boost, suspension, and tires. You have to have a full interior, but can take out the back seats. The lighter you can make the car the better too. I'm at 2,547lbs with a half tank of gas and race wheels. I usually only have 1/4 tank though when I run. You want the car to rotate a lot being that it is FWD. I have a really stiff rear sway bar setting. You'll also want stiffer springs in the rear than in the front. I run 450lb front and 600lb rear. If there is anything else you need help with you can find me anywhere in the Ohio section, pm me, or find me on FB. Good luck

Oh hai. After this past weekend, I can finally legitimately talk in here again. Slapped on a borrowed helmet (thanks again Pablo) and dusted off my autocross shoes. I was looking back and found that the last time I actually ran was in 2009, when the Miata was doing all sorts of this stuff...

But, I flew down to Atlanta for the weekend and ran aMaff's D-Prepared Miata beast. OMFG was that car fun. According to Andrew, I got the hang of the car really quickly and toward the end was within tenths of his time. (Wanna talk about a confidence booster?) So, here's a video of the fastest run I had in his car. According to the lights, I ran a 40.86.

I have another video too. The only good parts of this video are when it shows off the insanity of the B-Prepared carbon fiber Honda N600. And I absolutely drilled a cone too. Time on this run was in the 43's.

Watch how silly that Honda is.

Glad to have you back Phen. 2009 is when I started autoXing as this is my 4th year in. I think it was 2010 when I came over and ran that cold morning with frost on my car at the Lake and everyone was like autoX ewww. Why would you want to race your car. Now everyone is back on the bandwagon :)

The second video is set to private, Phen.

And I think Phen popped my auto-x cherry watching him. I wanted to try but was too skeerd. Then when you started coming around, Corey, it made me want to try it again seeing how much fun you had. A lot of it is just overwhelming for a beginner, to know what's going on and what you need. So these threads are great for info and to ask questions. Heck, I'm still learning and we've got great teachers in here!

Just changed the settings. Let me know if it works now.

I think our Ohio thread are freakin awesome. It's to bad more people don't check them out if they don't get butthurt. We have a great group of guys that are pretty much knowledgeable in almost all areas of the Mazda world.

I had so much fun beating my P5 within an inch of its life. It's too bad that it was such a slow ass STS car. The MSM is a slow as SSM car, but was still fun. When your cars are that far down on the totem pole from the beginning, you can have a lot of fun, but you don't really have a good grasp of how much you need to improve, or if you're up to the level of others. If that makes any sense. I got discouraged kinda quick because there was no way without spending thousands of dollars to compete with the others in SSM. Even then... that can be one helluva learning curve.

Yep the video works now, you cone killer :)

OMG. I did hit a few, but most of them were from learning how far out the tires stuck from the body. That one... I drilled the hell out of it. One of the other runs on the videos I have, I clipped the one at the very end in the kink, spun it and it stayed in the box.

I had a big learning curve when I first installed my 255's on the front. Almost fit a cone every run. Needed to take turns 2" wider when I was use to just skimming by the cone.

Street Touring Xtreme. What mods are you planning?

well im thinking a fully built motor boosted to 10psi, fmic, coilovers, brembo blank rotors w/ hawk pads, SSAFC Tuned, short throw shifter, CAI... that might be all but i could be forgetting something

Sounds like your into SMF territory aka Corey's ballpark. So he would be able to tell you for sure. If you want a good autocross car you should do some suspension work too.

by that you are talking all the control arms, trailing arms etc... i already had some of that in the planning, that was the other part i forgot to mention above...

No I'm talking stiffer springs, better shocks, and sway bars. Oh and I'm forgetting the #1 most important thing... good tires.

ok gotcha... i was planning to upgrade or get custom spring rates when i got coilovers... Sway bars im still kinda tossing around which ones would be decent, and as far as tires i was thinking maybe Yokohama S-Drives idk though would have to do research

If you want to be competitive in SMF you have to have Rcomps, coilovers, and a good rear sway bar, but if you are just out their for fun that who cares what you have. I would suggest doing a couple of events or even the rest of this year to get a feel for the limits of your car. AutoX isn't about power. Suspension and driver mod> than speed. The first year I raced in STX with next to nothing and had a blast. The year after I did springs and sway bar in STX. Then I went to SMF with Coilovers, Rcomps, header, and ported intake manifold. I still run stock boost with a tune, but this year I have 255's in the front and 225's in the rear. You don't need massive amount of power. The nice thing about SMF is you can lighten the car up a little bit. The cars that will give you trouble are the small little civics that have a crap ton of suspension in them and running high boost. Their small wheelbase and power to weight ratio are hard to beat.
