The modding has begun

I oddly had a 1.8 non turbo jetta that had more get up and go then this. I might consider the pully set (thinking about doing it on my suby as well) depending on the results of this mod. I might even go get it dyno'ed before and after to see some numbers.

you should get an early 90s protege. they have a 1.8 l na that is easy to boost for stupid power. and the n/a ones are pretty darned quick to (naughty)

The Parts Have Arrived

Here is a picture of the parts we are putting on the Mazda on 11/26/06. Will try and take pictures of the install as we go.

Add to the list:
-Anti-sieze for the bolts
-Electric impact (if you don't already have access to an impact).
-Zip ties for the old VTCS and VICS solenoids - to prevent CELs from them
-Will you need a CEL eliminator (or do you keep both O2 sensors)?
-Oxy sensor socket wrench
-jack stands
-

Consider:
-Doing the rear mount with the intake off - it will never be easier...
-kartboy exhaust hangers (from other messages i have seen - no personal experience)
-Get a thernoBlok intake kit (comes with intake gaskets) to keep intake heat down
-New part or clean the EGR valve assy since it is off...
just made me realize i dont know s*** about my car...snap

What benefits have actually been documented on the single runner IM vs. just taking out the VTCS from the oem IM on NA cars? Smells like 500.00 that could have been spent on something else.

I am trying to get a dyno of the before and after so we can see what the exact gains are from this set up. However, they dyno places want to charge me for both sessions instead of just one. I have a hard time paying for a full hour on both visits when I am only looking for 2 runs...

I bet it'll be better at hi rpms & worse at lower ones. The dual plenum IM maixmizes both ends of the power band/rpm range.

first off, we don't charge $500 for the manifold like some do/used to do/whatever they now do.

we have dynoed between 3 to 7 whp gains on strictly N/A cars with no other mods as well as having a smoother powerband and smoother midrange acceleration. i have been given claims of 10 whp gains by some n/a folks but i think that is quite generous to expect from just the manifold.

jason, good to see everything is in order. let me know how it all turns out for you.

Yeah, that's just an old price from awhile back somewhere. Not even sure who's price it was. It was close to that after buying the egr hookup. Haven't checked into it lately & never saw these results posted in any of the dozens of threads about it. Musta missed it. Let everyone know how it turns out.

Just wondering...I noticed that I don't see any front pipes for sale. Is there a reason for this?

front pipe? if you are referring to the j-pipe the header will eliminate that and connect right to the midpipe

So, looking at the Exhaust System from the Service Manual, I wont need #4 Front pipe and #6 WU-TWC?

The header will elminate 9,6, and 4 of the exhuast system or well at least the Thunder header did on mine.

A big thank you to ProtoType5 for his help today. We worked a good 6 to 7 hours today. We finished the job and came away with a few pointers for those who wish to tackle this project in the future. I will also get some dyno jet numbers of the car. So everyone can see what numbers to expect. I will take pictures of my hands and wrist later need to eat dinner but, I walked away with a few cuts and scrapes.
