The funniest price quote. ever.

Let me start by saying it is redonkulously hard to find a Cobb intake right now. At least I'm on a list at SU for either the Cobb or the latest thing they are testing (which I am actually going to get. I am happy about that. They said the new intake is awesome)...I digress..

Prior to calling SU I was getting upset at my lack of having an intake and called the mazda dealer I bought the car from to check into an MSCAI. Thought, "hey - I've bought two cars from these guys and done most my service work there too...they'll give me a reasonable price on parts AND labor." I mean, I wasn't expecting a blowout deal...just a fair price.

...drumroll...

$688 for an out the door price. Six hundred and eighty-eight ******* dollars for them to take a CAI from their stock room and put it on the car...a CAI...I literally busted out laughing, hard, at the guy, said ooookaay, and hung up. I mean...omfg. I didn't even get mad like I would if it were an obvious rip-off price...this was just comically outrageous.

I have 3 years of free oil changes from them and I am seriously considering cashing them in and never going there for anything ever again. $688...

I can't help but be really jealous of all the people who say they have cool dealerships around them...

I don't know what you were expecting..

Dealerships charge $80 for tire rotations and inspections. $300 for 15,000 mile services.

I'll admit, they've got to tear apart a lot to install the intake. More than i'd trust my dealer doing. So..of course they're going to charge a premium.

But..i'm more interested to hear about this new intake SU is testing???

well i'm probably blacklisted cuz my phone died when we were talking about mods and routes to go and all sorts of stuff and he probably thinks I hung up on him haha

when I call to order parts they'll be all..."I have your account up right here...oh...I see..."

according to guy on phone they are in the middle of their "long-term" testing on some cars and it is all good so far. boasted it's superiority to that of cpe/cobb. I don't have a lot of details other than they have "a lot" of stuff in the pipeline and it will all be hitting market roughly same time.

I was quoted 500 bucks. A new mazdaspeed intake is 300 bucks or so. And they charge 200 bucks for the install . . . LOL.

My advice would be to avoid the dealers. People love to become "friends" with dealers. Thats very hit or miss. If you want to take that risk fine. But you would be much better off demoding before visiting a dealership. Had a friend with a modded WRX. He was friends with all the suby guys at his dealership. They helped him with parts / etc. Long story short he blew his tranny and they turned their backs on him when he needed work.

My dealer quoted $450 total. $300 for the MSCIA and $150 for the installation. I thought that was a rip off! Sorry to hear and good luck finding one. I say you get some cardboard and duct tape and just make your own, it'll only cost about $4.25 total. lol

WOW! It's hard to believe I found my Cobb intake on craigslist locally for $50. This was about a year ago. I had no idea they would still be hard to find and worth so much $. I just got lucky. I love my Cobb intake. Anyone who is willing to pay $688 for a MSCAI is out of their mind. Also I've read that a CAI gives no advantage over a short intake on these turbo cars anyway. The few degrees makes no difference once the air goes through the turbo and the intercooler.

I think Dealer HOurly Rate is $100 an hour. I bet they look in the hOUrly rate book. and are basing it ogg how long the book says to pull the old intake, and reinstall a new one.

Subbed for info on a new intake. I was looking to replace my cp-e since I got it second hand and it looks like the shifter was rammed into it at some point. It isn't bad and I doubt it causes performance issues over a little dent.

Yeah that's absolutely insane. You could get a TBE, or AP, or even reworked K04 for that price...

I have a CP-e Nano and PG inlet combo and it ended up only costing me 240 bucks. Could put the rest of that money towards a DP, or SB/AP, or whatever the hell you want really.

The reality is, they just don't want the work, hence the quote. Stuff like this is a hassle. They make best, read easiest, money bait-and-switching grannies into head gasket swaps from tune ups and full four wheel brake swaps from pad changes.

Enthusiasts are a more demanding and questioning crowd, typically.

Hell of a concept eh?.....

CAI do take longer to install so it's not to ridiculous when you think about. Install of intake= your garage (or parking lot) a socket and an hour (if that) of time.

OP. Buy a used intake, and clean the filter, same s***, alot cheaper...

**NM. Just reread about the SU thing. Wonder what they got going on...

While everyone is bragging about how good of a price they got an intake for.....

I got mine for free + an outrageous fee of $0 for install.

$688 for a factory CAI (which won't reduce resale) installed isn't too bad considering it's a post-purchase add-on. I would expect you could haggle 50-75 off from the labor rate, but otherwise seems fairly decent. You can't possibly expect a dealership installing a factory option to take into account you believing it's a 1-2hour job. Mazda(and their dealers) are not here to bow to your every whim, they have to be competitive with the competition, which sometimes might involve sprucing up the price to be around what others like Subaru and Mitsubishi charge, even if it's easier on their car. I'm not saying they actually do this, but just offering a suggestion.

Just wanted to add on to the ridiculousness. This is an e-mail quote I received from my local dealer. I asked what I needed for my 60k service. This is what I found in my inbox this morning.

COOLANT SERVICE--$99.99
FUEL SERVICE--$99.99
TUNE UP---$280.00
POWER STEERING FLUSH--$99.99
BRAKE FLUID FLUSH---$99.99

ROBERT HERE ARE THE PRICES YOU REQUESTED FOR THE 60K MILE SERVICE THIS COMES WITH A COMPLETE INSPECTION OF THE VEH INCLUDING BRAKES AND TIRES PRICES ARE ALREADY DISCOUNTED BUT NOTHING IS ETCHED IN STONE!! LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK.

Here's what I think!!!! (fu) (fu) (fu)

I ended up calling a mobile mechanic, he's coming out tomorrow to do everything AND replace my sparkplugs for $140....

What would the dealer do for a tune up thats worth 280 bucks? I hope that includes taking the intake manifold off and cleaning the head. Or hes charging 70 bucks a piece of spark plugs.

Impossible to beat free but I came close. I used Delta SkyMiles to get Amazon gift cards and ordered my AEM CAI from them last year.
