The Engine Buildup: NEED HELP!!!

who had a crank walk failure and/or oil starvation?
Oil starvation here. Lost a rod bearing to it. Quite a few other N/A guys have had issues with it. That's why a few people are now developing oil pans.

As for crank walk, I don't know of anyone that has had a failure direclty related to it. Though, it has been mentioned because the thrust bearing is very small, and could cause durability issues.

This is what I was reffering too. I need this damn thing to be relaible.

Well then sell all the parts you ordered for it and keep it at stock boost and never beat on it and it will be reliable. But you bought a used car and lugged the motor and blew it. You never boost in low rpm's, downshift then boost. When I watch my AEM WBo2 and boost for a sec in 5th at low rpm's the car is running like 14-15 on the afr's and my car is flashed. So if you are flashed and they leaned it out you are playing with fire by boosting in the higher geare at low rpm's. On the other hand if I pull to redline in 4th and then boost in 5th my afr's are below 11's and very rich. You should have never been boosting in 4th at 40mph. You should be in second and boosting at 40mph but never 4th, hell you shouldn't be boosting in 3rd at 40mph for that matter. Someday people will learn this when all the msp's have blown up. It's a very expensive lesson to learn and it can happen on any turbo car not just the speed.

I agree; however I think it is B.S. that I can't boost in 3rd gear unless I'm goin 60; so I do. You can say I'm asking for it, but if I can't boost at my torque peak RPM, then Mazda can blow me.

Edit: I LOVE MY MAZDASPEED!! (hump)

I can understand if i was flooring the car in 4th gear at 40mph, but i'm talking about just applying enough pedal pressure that the boost gauge barely tiped over the 0 mark. We arent talking 6psi, more like 1/2-1 TOPs. If the engine can handle that the **** it. And yea, I do downshift and boost, but i was just trying to pass one car and need 5mph more. Its not like i was beating the car.

You can but what rpm's are you talking about boosting at. If you pull to redline in 2nd then boost straight threw 3rd, but why would you ever wanna boost in 3rd or 4th at less than 3000 rpm's. There is no power there. Our cars make power past 4000 rpm's. By all means boost away though after all I don't care it's not my motor and I don't have to pay to have it fixed. YOU ARE NEVER SUPPOSED TO LUG A TURBO CAR, ANY TURBO CAR.

If you were boosting in 4th at 40mph you were beating it. SORRY. But it's the truth. You couldn't have been doing more than 2000 rpm's. It just was not smart especially if your car is flashed. That means your car was running super lean in boost. Invest in a wbo2 and watch your afr's at different boost levels and different rpm's you will be suprised what you see. I mean at least if you were flooring it you would be giving the engine enough fuel, instead you were boosting at half throttle, lugging the motor and depriving it of fuel. Sounds like user error to me. Especially after see all the other people on here who have had failures while boosting at lower rpm's and half throttle.

daedalus, despite ur labor prob bein a lil low, you've left out a bunch of expenses. the e-manage itself is 370 or so.. but you need 600 in other parts (all the sensors and harness) plus you need an accurate wideband, so say the aem (cause its badass) and thats another 350. so add another almost thousand to your estimates. and i'll vouch for MAM's shortblock. dunno why, its just nice s*** from what i hear

Damn.... I wish I know you did this before I bought my motor. I would have bought yours instead. I will add this info to my "Ultimate MSP Vendors List".

Our short blocks are fully machined and deburred.
When we build our motors we do the whole nine yards.

Our short blocks come with:

CP Pistons
CP Gold ring package
Oliver billet rods
Toga bearings
ARP Main studs
ARP head studs

We address the crank walk issuse by having a second thrust bearing machined and installed($400), crank nitrated a second time($100) and then micro polished, line hone, square deck, bored, honed, plateau, all oil gallay's chaffered, full block debur, etc.
We do not bore & hone and put new rods in pistons in.Everything is done to spec and a full build sheet comes with our motors. The customer will know all tolerances and specs.
Our motors are $2995, plus core and shipping.

If you noticed I was talking about boosting at peak torque spot...well above 3k. Anyway, the whole point of my post was b/c you are making it sound like you cant boost unless you are using the lowest possible gear at the given MPH.

3rd gear at 40 btw is above 3k.

Read the original post you idiot. It says 4th at 40mph not 3rd. And even 3rd at 40mph is not much above 3000rpm's if at all, but that's besides the point he blew his motor because he was boosting in 4th gear at 40mph. That is what he said 4th at 40mph. Go ahead and blow your motor too I don't give a ****.

From your own post you say you lug the motor under boost. 3rd gear under 60mph in not where your peak torque is. I am glad to see yet another person who has no idea how to drive a stick. Why don't you go ahead and buy your self a nice automatic. My girlfriend knows better than to lug any motor let alone a turbo motor under boost.

I am over this conversation, good luck with the whole motor blowing thing.

you say the AEM will cost 370+600+ another 350 or so...

think again bud :( its a bit more than that...

370+600+350 will only buy the brain. You still need a harness...

That price actually is 100 off for the emanage, I didnt figure in the pressure sensor, but it does include all the harnesses and install. The wideband is going to be borrowed from my buddy who is going to tune it with his software and laptop. But I do appreciate your concern!

Strongbear0 - dude just chill a little, so we all are guilty of boggin our cars, and its bad. Point taken. How bout a little constructive critiscm, instead of negative "your stupid and i'm not" comments? What do you think of the build specs? Anything you would add?

There is a possibility that my freind is also going to through together a 3" downpipe for me or I might just get the apex 3"incher.

And 03MSP... your input is higly welcome. The car is now at transonic. And its in a million and a half peices. You wouldnt mind coming by every once in awhile to give brandon a working example of the engine? Mazda dissasemble it, through all the parts, screws and bolts into a big friggin pile and sent me on my way. ******* huge jigsaw puzzle.

Strongbear0: You seem pretty intelligent, which is why I am wondering why you are being so strong on this subject. Mazda figured people wouldn't know how to drive a turboed car, and that's why they tuned the ECU as such. 6.5 psi is not going to blow your motor because of low AFRs. They have a warantee on this car, and they tuned it so the engine would last through it (rich and conservative). I completely agree that it is not the best for the motor, and if you've upped your boost you are completely right.

Tell that to the man that started the thread. He blew the motor on stock boost and I guarentee he is not the first. Yes, the car is rich but it leans out under boost in low rpms under load. Why? because you are at 1/4 or 1/2 throttle and in boost. I would suggest everyone get a wb02 to watch the afr's and that way you can see the lean spots I am talking about. So it was not exactly built safe. It was built to make a quick buck and they were obviously not concerned with longevity.

Your list looks good, other than the fact that I don't think you have enough money figured in there. I too believed I could do it for a lot less but once everything is said and done I will have around 12k invested in the msp. It adds up quickly.
