The CX-9 gave up it's life

Last Thursday night my wife was hit broadside by a Honda Accord. Impact was directly in the center of the doors on the driver's side. Honda was traveling 35-40mph. Wife was unhurt, other driver was unhurt by virtue of her airbag (car totaled). CX-9 was totaled by insurance. The CX-9 remained structurally intact, there was no intrusion into the passenger compartment. Curiously the side airbags did not deploy. When I finally saw the car in daylight I was amazed at the amount of damage but also amazed at how the car protected my wife....nice job Mazda.

We bought the car new in 2009. Only things that went wrong in 85,000 miles were replacing the rubber button on the door for keyless entry ($35 part) and the BSM was starting to go wacky on hot days. Other than those repairs just regular maintenance was done. It was a great vehicle for us.

Unfortunately the current CX-9 is a little long in the tooth and we'll probably go a different direction on a replacement. Thanks for all the help this forum provided me.

It gave you some good years, and it's nice to hear how well it held up in the crash. But I'm with you--it's long past the best choice out there in the market. The new Highlander and the Santa Fe would top my list if I needed a replacement for my CX-9.

I found this while looking for your button repair post. Glad your wife is ok, and glad to hear the CX-9 did what it is supposed to. This kind of report is useful to those of us who are carting our precious cargo around everyday.

Are you still looking for a 7 seater? We looked at other 7 passenger SUV's like the Santa Fe, Highlander, etc. before we bought the 2008 CX-9. The main issue we had with those "midsize" SUV's is the lack of rear cargo space with the 3rd row seats up. The CX-9 still as a decent amount of space in between the hatch door and the third row seats. The Santa Fe, Sorento, and Highlander had virtually no usable space, forcing one to use the cargo space with the 3rd row seats in the down position.

Of course, if you don't need 7 passenger seating, then there are a multitude of options, including the sky-active engine offering of the CX-5.

Glad your wife is unhurt.
If the sensor of the side airbag was not crashed, the airbags would not deploy.
The curtain airbags should have, right?
Any pictures you can share as testimony to its safety?

Glad to hear that everyone was ok after the crash and the car did what it was supposed to do.
I looking forward to see what Mazda does with the CX9 as I hope they keep it alive and going with some changes and such.
If you need 7 or 8 passengers would look at the Honda Pilot, wife has one and loves it. She traded out her 2009 this year for a 2014 and likes it so far.
They did downgrade it a little bit on a few minor features and such vs her 2009 but it seems a lot of manufactures are doing that these days.
Like someone else said if the 7 passenger is not required I would look at the CX-5, my only concern is towing as I move around the country and need something that can tow a light trailer with a 900lb Motorcycle and furniture
