I figured id start this thread to log my experience with a turbo i recently purchased a Godspeed GT2871R. The turbo is a Journal bearing with a compact GT28R compressor housing (2 bolt inlet, 3 bolt outlet). I got the turbo for 300 bucks shipped from a Godspeed Vendor i did not buy this turbo off of eBay.

So far i've taken the housings off and taken the center assembly to be balanced. I recommend anyone that buy's a eBay turbo or knock off turbo of any kind to do this. It's cheap and will probably save your China Charger from failing as a out of balance shaft puts a lot of stress on not only the bearings but the seals as well. It cost me 65 dollars at a local turbo shop to have my center section disassembled and balanced. it should be done this afternoon (1/20) so i will hopefully have some new to post this evening about how well these turbos are balanced from the factory.

If anyone else has had PERSONAL experience with ebay/china charger's chime in and let me know how it worked out for you. Please don't turn this thread into a flame war let's have a legitimate discussion about these cheaper turbo's.
 
Well just got a call from the shop saying my center section is ready for pick up. He told the balance on it was within spec but was on the loose end. They spent some time on it getting it as close as they could to being perfectly balanced. All in all i'm still glad i spent the 65 bucks getting it balanced as I've heard of some turbo's coming out the factory that are 4x out of the recommended spec for balance. Will re-assemble the turbo tonight and try to get some pics up of it this weekend.
 
the turbo's i used i ordered off ebay i don't remember a name or brand. i don't think there really was one(this was 4yrs back).. i did not take into a shop as we do not have a turbo shop anywhere near where i live.. the turbo's both seemed to work fine for awhile. but at 12-14psi they both went out after about 4 months of use. i also found that the turbos even tho it said was t25 flanged it would not bolt up to the downpipe. i had to modify my old dp to get them to fit.. all in all i personally would rather spend the extra $600 for a dbb turbo from garrett and not have to worry bout all the rest. cause honestly in the end you'll be lookin for a new turbo soon and no matter if the shop checked the turbo how long will that even last? like the saying goes "you get what you pay for"

That guy has been running a Godspeed 3076 on his ms6 for 10k+ miles now with as you can see no shaft play and no problems. I see you are to the firm belief of if it's not a name brand turbo it's s***. Also what the shop did was check to make sure everything was in spec. Alot of the reason why ebay turbo's fail is because they are assembled loosely with s*** seals and not balanced properly. Alot of people used to say that if you ran a 28rs on your protege you would blow your s*** up even at low boost. I ran mine with a 505 mani everyday with just the stock ecu controlling fuel and timing everyday @10 psi for over a year without one hiccup. All i'm saying is have a open mind i believe that with this particular brand of turbo if you take care of it and run the proper oil restrictor (.065) that it will be fine. although I am fully prepared to eat s*** if i am wrong and it fails on my in 3 months lol.

i'm speakin from my experiences with those turbos. and like any product there will always be ppl with bad and good experiences. but me personally the cheap way isn't always the right way.. hopefully it works for you. and 10k on a turbo isn't much

hehe yea thanks man. I just got done reassembling the turbo and everything looks fantastic. Should be installing within the next few weeks. I need to buy some misc stuff and get the outlet adapters I need.
 
IMO it depends on what your plans are and what your budget is. if its your 2nd car and you dont beat on it all the time then why not. its honestly pretty easy to replace a turbo (and very easy with cheap V-band outlets from ebay) once you have the setup made. since you already have one I wouldnt be worried just install it and have a certified mech write you a note for $10 that he installed it if you need to return. as long as its in the 1 year warranty from a seller that doesnt look like they will be bankrupt in 2 months you should be fine. just remember to use good SS hardware or you will have a pain if you do have to replace and studs break in the manifold. otherwise its simple. If it lasts 12 months, for $300 its the deal of the year. $25/month to have a car that is fast (providing you have the supporting mods) + a day of your time to replace if it starts to leak and needs to be replaced. deal of the year. i guess it would not be worth it if you would have to pay someone to replace. if you do it yourself its a couple beers while watching some sports in the background at most providing no studs break.

when you think about it, just drain oil/coolant then
unhook oil in out
coolant in out
intake
exhaust
charge pipe
4 bolts on manifold
take piss

Ive been doing it several times a week test fitting a new setup.

however, I will say that if you plan on competing seriously in motorsports or like having piece of mind with a guaranteed reliable DD setup, or if you enjoy bragging/showing off your car than I would suggest youvjust pay to play with a quality turbo.

also remember journal bearing + compressor surge is not good so make sure you dont have any turkey, it wont be OK like it is with the stock BB msp turbo.

and of course if it does last as long as oem you get to come back and make fun of all the people who told you not to buy.

Always nice to see people trying new stuff when they have the MSP as a spare car. Good luck.

Though I should clarify, it's nice seeing people trying stuff with the MSP that is actually WORTHWHILE, and not something stupid like negative camber in the rear wheels just to get the car lower.
 
sub sounds like its worthy of saving some money. The way i see it though when you buy cheap things it depends how the factory felt on that day lol sometimes it could be just as good as a garrett turbo and other times a huge piece of garbage that will end up damaging other things like say for example if one of the fins in the turbo snaps off and goes into the engine.

When turbo fins break they explode. its not like your getting a whole fin past the IC. think 130000 RPM and metal. its tiny pieces that can definately make it into the engine.
