well, after some thinking and 8 beers i've made my decisions;) option one is for keeping the stock HU. option 2 is for an after market HU.

Option 1:
power requirements:
16 feet of 4 guage knukonceptz power wire.
4 feet of 4 guage ground wire.
total $20 http://www.knukonceptz.com/search_r...earch=fromSearch&btnSearch.x=7&btnSearch.y=10
positive and negative battery terminals from lightning audio.
total $40 http://www.thezeb.com/caraudio/lightningaudiobatteryterminals.html
ANL inline fuse holder from knukonceptz.
$20 http://www.knukonceptz.com/detail.asp?product_id=FH20
either a 100 or 150 amp ANL fuse depending on requirements.
$6 http://www.thezeb.com/caraudio/lightningaudiofuses.html
two 4 guage ring terminals, one for grounding the battery up front, one for the amp.
$2
http://www.knukonceptz.com/detail.asp?product_id=RT4516BK

main equipment:
focal components up front.
$230 http://www.onlinecarstereo.com/caraudio/product.asp?sku=11705
elemental design 10K.14.
$125 http://www.edesignaudio.com/ep/kseries.htm
avionixx AXT 800.4 amp.
$285 http://www.edesignaudio.com/ep/amps.htm

misc accessories:
adapter plate for components.
$8 http://www.sounddomain.com/sku/SCOSA68
david navone 2 channel LOC, so fading to the front doesn't effect the sub.
$29.50 http://www.davidnavone.com/detail.asp?PRODUCT_ID=N-7V
2 meter RCA's from LOC to splitter.
$5 http://www.knukonceptz.com/detail.asp?product_id=KLA2M
2 splitters.
$5
speaker wire. 24 feet, so the front channels can be run to the LOC, then another 12 feet is used to run from the amp back to the front speakers.
$1.40 per foot, $33.60 total http://www.knukonceptz.com/detail.asp?product_id=KAR124BLS
6 feet of 10 guage speaker wire for sub.
$1.15 per foot, $6.90 total http://www.knukonceptz.com/detail.asp?product_id=KAR10BLS
sub zone sealed box H-101.
$50 http://www.thezeb.com/caraudio/subzone_universal_sub_boxes.html

i think that's about it:p
grand total for option 1=$866 before shipping:D a lot of it is shipped for free. if after shipping there is still a little over $100 left, i'd highly recomend the coustic XM-7 for $106 https://www.caraudioexpert.com/productView3.asp?productID=2463
or stepping up to the O-series subwoofer;)

option 2: replace the HU
here are the changes from option 1:
12 feet rather than 24 feet of the bi wire speaker wire. $16.80
2 sets of 5 meter RCAs.
$14 http://www.knukonceptz.com/detail.asp?product_id=KLS5M
no LOC
dash pocket.
$8 http://www.sounddomain.com/sku/SCOMA1537B
wiring harness.
$5 http://www.sounddomain.com/shop/item.pl?sku=SCOMA03B
pioneer DEH-P3500 HU.
$145 https://www.caraudioexpert.com/productView3.asp?productID=3522
knukonceptz battery terminals.
$24 http://www.knukonceptz.com/search_r...earch=fromSearch&btnSearch.x=11&btnSearch.y=8
the total for option 2 should be $951.70 before shipping, which could possibly be over $1000 after shipping, but it'll be close. if needed the components can be changed out for a lower priced unit, such as the http://www.onlinecarstereo.com/caraudio/product.asp?sku=12638

i would have recomended the us amps like rider69, as well as the CDT components, but since he already did, i chose to use other brands, so there is variety in this challenge;)

I have been trying to come up with some other options but the price on those items is almost too hard to beat. Besides that, I am not sure that onlinecarstereo.com is an authorized vendor, their prices are pretty damn good though.

another setup:

HU: Stock
Front Components: Infinity 6800cs $200, Crutchfield
Subwoofer: Kicker Solo-Baric L5 S12L52 $250, Crutchfield
4 Channel Amp: Kicker KX600.4 (75x2+300x1) $400, Crutchfield
Sub Box: SubZone HK-121LQ $60, Thezeb.com
Wiring: KOLAK44/30Ft 16ga. Speaker wire $45, Knukoncepts.com

Total: $955, shipping would add about $45 bringing the total to $1000!

yeah, the CDT's and US acoustic amps are a hell of a good deal:D that's why i had my friend get the components, a USX600D, and a USX4065;) can't beat that deal:p not to mention the fact that those amps are very efficient, so there is little power consumption. i've heard different things about onlinecarstereo being an authorized seller. usually it's brand specific;)

I don't know if it was this vendor or another internet vendor, but I emailed them asking about whether they were authorized and of course, no reply!! Do they sell JL Audio? If so that is who I emailed. If you go to Tweeter.com, they will flat out say "Not available for online purchase for JL" and of course JL's infamous 90 day warranty if you install it. It's like you are paying for the warranty to have it done at their authorized dealers. I had another bad exp. with JL vendors, but won't go in to it. It turned me off of their products because of the service. Long story though.

MisterT

Jl has no internet dealers and there is only a 90 warrenty if the vendor refuses you the one year warrenty do to improper installation.

THese are good setups guys.
I will have to keep the link to this thread on my clip board to constantly direct newbie's here.

Problem is...after a while, the prices will change and there will be other stuff available. Althought the idea of what you could get for $1000 is good to know.

For all of you deciding to keep the stock headunit:
I always have said that the system can only be limited by the headunit. So a great system always starts there. You can spend all the money you want on speakers, and subs, and amps, but you will never get a great quality sound out of the stock headunit.
And going with an Aiwa?! thats almost worse than the stock one. Very very poor quality there.

Exactly, you can spend all the money you want, but are limited to $1000 in this 'exercise.' So leaving the stock head unit in is a good option in this price range. Just my opinion though.

Hey - I've already DONE this in my own P5.

Here's the lowdown:

Deck: Kenwood MP8017. Not the best, by FAR not the worst - plays MP3 CDs, and gets the job done. approx $250 when new (1.5 years ago)

Front speakers: Infinity Reference 605cs. 6.5" component set. Nice stuff for the price. $110 at Ikesound.com

Rear speakers: Peerless 6.5" drivers maybe 805152 or something like that? I haven't done the required tuning yet, but I hope to use as pure midbasses. $80 at Madisound.com

Subs: Infinity 100.3dvc. A pair of 'em. 10". This might be my only "cheat", as these were found on eBay. $75 each, shipped.

Amps: Lanzar Vibe. I have a 428 (125 watts x 4) running the doors speakers, and a 248 (600 x 1) on the subs. These amps are a STEAL, and put out very close to rated power. At $130 EACH SHIPPED, I'll deal with a little overrating.

Wiring: mostly knukonceptz, with Monster RCAs, and I have to estimate at $50.

Sub box: fiberglass enclosure made by me. Materials estimate is $100.

TOTAL: $1005.

Damn, missed it by 5 bucks.

But it can be done. Use an MDF sub box and we're under budget. My system doesn't shake the block, but believe me, it cranks loud and clear.

Thats it, no more ideas?
Does anyone want to do a all BB, CC, tweeter or crutchfield one?

Here it is...the Circuit City Special:
Speaks
Front: Infinity 6-1/2" Two-way Component Speaker System - 200$

Rear: Infinity Reference 6 Two-Way Speaker - 100$

Sub: Infinity 12 1200-Watt Subwoofer - 100$

Amps:
Doors: Alpine MRPF240 - 200$
Sub: Alpine MRPM350 - 200$

Total at Circuit City - 800$

Assuming you pick it up at a store in a state w/ no tax, then you have 200$ left over for LOCs (davidnavone.com), wiring(knukonceptz.com), and building a box. Whatcha think about that?

Edit:
Per 1st's command wiring must be from CC. However...I did not find any on their website, hence I would use what you can from KNU. They have a 4 guage 4 channel install kit for 36$, supplement that with whatever else you need for ~30$ more and shipping. Total: 880$

Now the box...the rules state you can make the box yourself (like I said above) so add 50$ there. Total: 930$

Now...the LOCs...you may need two, or just one since both amps have speaker level inputs. If you use two it'll put you over the top..at around 80$ if you pop for the Hi-Q ones. But with economy versions you should be able to get right under 1k$.

If this is still too much...back off on the inifinity's for the front and get something cheaper and non-component such as the Alpine type-r's. If you need to have the box from CC, then you have to cut 20$ somewhere...be it wires, LOCs, or speaks...up to you!

Wiring has to be CC too, and don't forget about the sub box (no)

I prolly went overboard on the sub, but hey, i love that sub. And i could've saved money by getting stuff other than infinity, but they make a lot of really nice quality stuff. And I saved a lot by getting the box for free. Its nice those 3 way 6"x9" were on sale for cheaper than the 2 ways, one more tweeter, for better highs :D
