A lot of modern comforts that we take for granted are based on the work by Nikola Tesla. Everything from our AC power system, to spark plugs, to radio waves, to florescent bulbs and so forth were all the brainchild of this guy.

I dub Nikola Tesla my hero of the day. Check out his wikipedia article...this guy did some outstanding work, and invented technologies that we still don't use today.

Tesla FTW, he he. We are from the same country too, maybe I should pickup where he left off. He did invent some crazy stuff, but most impostantly like you said the stuff we use everyday.

At first I thought this was going to be about the Tesla Roadster (basically an Elise powered by an electric motor).

Title still fits, as the Tesla Roadster > You.

But yeah....Nikola Tesla was a great man...without his work we probably would not be anywhere near as technologically advanced as we are.

Not to mention...he is the namesake of one heavy-duty Rock band!(band)

thanks to people like Edison, Tesla is truly underappreciated by history. he was branded a crackpot by the establishment of the time for daring to defy the conventional wisdoms espoused by the pro-direct current folk. not saying Edison is overrated by any means, simply that the works of Tesla are not as well known as they should be.

would you guys say that there is a modern day Einstein/Tesla/Edison? If so, who? Would Steve Jobs be considered one? Bill Gates?

Good question smoof! Unfornately the Einstein/Tesla/Edisons of today go unnoticed due large compaines marketing the product or are often dismissed for ideas that make more money.

Steve Jobs is a close example... he has revolutionized our daily lives with mp3 players and now cell phones are next.

I have to disagree. People like Tesla study/perform basic science, which is dedicated to our understanding of the world at a much more basic level then the iPod. Their discoveries and inventions are based on this basic scientific understanding, and as such, can be applied and expanded to every aspect of human endevour.

Steve Jobs is a guy who builds a better mouse trap. This is an important and lucrative skill, to be sure. But far from the historical significance of a Tesla or an Edison.

Are there modern day Teslas? Maybe, but only history will confirm that an individual's discoveries or inventions are in the same league as Tesla. Maybe we know these modern Teslas' names today, but their impact has yet to be fully felt.

Did you not read the first part of my post? I agree on the better mouse trap. I was responding to smoof mention of the name, and in the respect that a change has been made on our day to day life.

I was just pondering the same thing yesterday. For starters, Edison just wasn't on the same level as Einstein or Tesla, IMO (although Edison was a great man). I honestly don't think we have any inventors around today comparable to Tesla. I mean, that guy made so much off the wall stuff that I'm still not sure is reproduced yet. He made sleep machines, transported power long distance wirelessly, made small mechanical resonators that could make entire buildings or large structures vibrate, etc. Do yourself a favor and read that entire article to see how truly great that guy was.

As for a modern day Einstein - Steven Hawking. I'd say those two are pretty much on the same level.

As for Jobs and Gates, Gates > Jobs, by a longshot. Steve W invented the Apple Computer, Jobs is just a great businessman. He's not some exceptional supergenius. Gates got his hands dirty and invented things.

Tesla is not as well known because he liked to claim things he could not prove. Many of his designs have failed when rebuilt to his specifications and no one really saw them work in the first place. Of course he has that major stuff that did, don't get me wrong, but he was kind of a kook.

Ironically they tested his earthquake machine last night on Mythbusters... Yes I am a dork...
