Terrible Bogging/Idle Issues

Circuit

Low and Slow

First issues with the car since the new motor over 2 years ago ... and they're a doozy. On my way home from work, the car started to bog from a stop. It just wouldn't rev and at stoplights the idle would dip with a thump from the exhaust (not really a pop). I got home and it wasn't too bad. I went to go out and it would totally bog in any gear under 3000rpm and almost died at the light. I could have the pedal on the ground and it would just not go anywhere.

I pulled the plugs and the center two (2 and 3?) were a bit wet with fuel. The outer plugs were dry. I went to Kragen and got a replacement coil pack for coils 2 and 3 and also a code reader since I had a flashing CEL before I shut the car down last. Codes P0300 (random missfire) and P0660 (IAV - VICS solenoid). I swapped the coil pack and replaced the solenoid with the spare VCTS (or is it the other way around?) solenoid sitting my IM since I have the MP3 IM.

Car still ran terrible and AEM UEGO showed it to be running very rich at idle and revving (12-ish compared to 14.5 normally).

Here are a couple videos of it bogging, etc.

I am getting it towed to the shop now, as I don't really have time to fix it myself (work and busy weekend plans). I have searched and the main things I am seeing are:

1. Coils, plugs, and wires - Coils are still original (145k), but even after replacing 1, the issue still exists. Plugs have 30k on them. Wires (nology hotwires) have less than 15k.
2. Intake tube ripped - Haven't checked yet - Shop will check
3. EGR failed - Haven't checked yet - Shop will check

Thoughts?

Vacuum leak? I recently experienced a leak in the line running to the VTCS actuator and it caused the exact same idle

Make sure that if your intake still has flaps... that they are moving when they should...

Easily diagnosed with a set of vice grips.

Attach to the arm and hold them open... Go for a drive and see if it is still bogging..

I agree with Brain, if you still have the original air intake hose on there you might want to check the ribs on the according parts. I just replaced mine and it was doing the same thing. Too much air will cause the ECU to tell the injectors to pump more fuel in.

Well the shop had the car all damn day and could not reproduce the issue. They are going to check it out more and drive it around to try to get it hot to see if something happens... damnit. That is the worst thing to hear LOL

Had the ignition wires replaced back to stock and the shop thought they fixed it. I picked up the car earlier and once it got warm, the issue came back. DAMNIT.

Things suggested on FB:

Crank Position Sensor
Idle Air Controller
MAF

Have you checked the Air Intake Hose or any thing close to the intake? Take off your intake and actually check it, bend it or inspect it to make sure no cracks or lines are present.

I already replaced one coil, but the shop called me late Friday and said the miss-fire was following the other coil LOL WTF. So I'll talk to them tomorrow to see what's up.

My p5 is about to hit 100K. In the last six weeks I've had two problems that caused similar symptoms.

1) ripped intake hose. Seriously, this thing was in bad bad shape. CEL with a code. New Air intake hose fixed that
2) coils. Just got a p0300 yesterday after getting a P0302(misfire on second cyl.) But afterword I kept getting the p0300 (the p0302 kind of went a way). The forum here had a coupla guys saying the coils are the likely problem. I went to the parts store to buy the two coil packs, they only had one in stock. So I bought it and replaced the coil servicing cyl 2 and 3 b/c I figured the original p0302 was for a reason. And whatya know? No codes! Runs like a dream. I go back to parts store in an hour or so to buy the other coil pack and new plug wires to complete the tune-up.

It was a five minute fix. 10mm wrench for batt terminal and screws in the coil, and the 5/8" plug puller.

PS I hope its not the EGR. That thing is infamously a bear to get off for cleaning. Just about impossible to get it off without stripping the 4 philips heads.

I tried last night and it was not coming off at all. I left it alone. Gambling it will be cheaper to get the dealership do it with screwheads in tact than me trying, then stripping the screws, then giving up, then bringing it in anyway to the shop, and finally being charged extra labor for removing stripped screws.

^ i though the same until i found the right small wrench to fit there allowing you room to snug it in tight and with room to easily loosen them up.

Had similar symptoms with the bogging and idle issues and it was the rubber intake hose cracked on the bottom where the ribbed area is. Hard to spot best to take the hose off and inspect it.

Looks like my issue has been resolved. Both coil packs were replaced and I drove the car to work (20+ miles in traffic) and no issues at all.

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone!
