taking off your cat.

yeah, it's kind of a moot point now a days. In most instances, cats don't rob the power people think they do. For those of you with subscriptions to grassrootsmotorsports, see the testing done on a VERY healthy miata (engine built to max stock tolerances). The gains were... well... saying small is being generous.

...that's you just live in Wisconsin where they don't require emission testing (well only in like 5 counties they do), then you're save and polluting like a mother f-!

The results would be a much different outcome if they tested on a turbo car... n/a no point to doing it and in some cases you'll actually lose backpressure and power! Turbo...less back pressure is better!

I'm not doing this again tonight....

velocity, not back pressure.

You really should run a cat. It is there for a reason. Not to rob you or anybody else of power, but *for the sake of decreasing harmfull emissions*.

If you think you do not need to care about polluting the environment, fine. By the same token, I hoep you don't mind if I come dump my used motor oil in your yard, b/c it's just too much trouble for me to dispose of it properly.

+1 on a bigger difference with turbo cars. I run catless for a number of reasons some superficial and some helpful. First off I prefer the sound of a catless exhaust on these cars (hey, I said some were superficial) but more importantly I can tell how the car is running more easily with a catless exhaust. I can tell if the car is running rich, running lean, burning oil, etc. all by the smell of the exhaust and/or what's coming out of the tailpipe. As for the environment I see it this way: a few cars running catless exhaust isn't going to do that much damage especially considering the shear number of cars on the roads and number of people who don't modify their cars. If it were that big of an issue all states would be like CA and have super strict emissions laws. This is also all not considering the fact that there are trucks and aircraft out there that pollute more during one workday or flight than the average car does in one year.

^^ It's about the philosophy, and long-term effect. Not for you to justify the impact of just one car.
This is a public forum read by thousands of people. Plus there are literally millions of other people that modify their cars not just in the US but worldwide. If all those people adopt that attitude, then yes, it makes a huge difference.
Why the hell do you think they put it on there? Just to sell extra metal? You think the OEs like having to put smog equipment on the cars? No way. But they do it because (a) it's the law and (b) it's the *right* thing to do.

So you think that you have some kind of special right to just do what you want and thumb your nose at what the authorities say, just because you don't believe it make a difference. Great attitude.

Maybe you don't have kids or any concern about what things will be like for them when they are old - but I do. At teh end of my life, I want to be able to say I at least tried everything can to make this a nice place for them. All te hsmall things add up.

The thing is, not everyone is going to take that approach - I really hate that argument "If everyone thought like you then..." Ok, so millions modify their cars, how many of them do you think have gone completely catless? I'm willing to bet that well less than half of all those who modify their cars are willing to do so in fear of the law. For me, that is a risk I have prepared to take. So out of all the consumer cars on all the roads in the world, how many do you think are catless, 1%? That impact is hardly significant considering the many other sources of pollution which well overshadow automobiles such as aircraft, seagoing vessels an even large over-land transports such as semis and whatnot. You can preach all you want about how you think I don't care about the future and whatnot when it's actually my job to make the aircraft engines of the future more efficient and cleaner burning...

The main point: not everyone thinks like me and they never will so it's a moot point.

ya probably 1% or even less, but everything helps I believe, anyways semis are usually disel? and correct me if im wrong but you dont need a cat on a disel right?

If anything you would need a cat on diesels more so than with regular gasoline engines. Diesel is actually a less refined form of petroleum than gasoline is and therefore has more of the heavy particulates gasoline does, I believe.

i appreciate the power change (not gain) my exhaust setup gives me. sure i probably picked up a couple horses, but not enough to really feel significant. its the change in the power band you feel on a NA p5.

plus i couldnt give a rats ass about emissions...

im pretty damn sure you dont, I mean at least the turbo guys may get a good difference but I think NA is just plain sad, the gains im sure are down there in the 1hp range..sounds like a placebo effect to me....and im sure you really dont care because your probably part of the 1% or less in the world who does it, but I would play it safe with those kind of gains for the sake of you car and your wallet lol, plus going thru the CA ref is a b****..
