2003 Protege 5
I have a new 2003 Protege 5 with about 9,000 km on it. I was thinking about switching to synthetic oil. Has anyone done this? Any recommendations?

Great site everyone, been lurking for some time now. Decided now was a good a time as any to start posting!!

Seriously, dude, search. This topic has been discussed to death.

The short of it:

A ton of people run synthetic (I do). Recommendations: a good quality oil like Mobil1 SuperSyn or Amsoil (don't waste money on Series 2000 though, not really worth it). Get a good filter, better than Fram. Mobil1 filters from Autozone have been working well for me.

Oil change rate is a hot topic. Mobil1 says that twice the manufacturer's recommended period is fine. Amsoil guarantees 25K miles with 12K oil filter changes. I do about 10-12K on average (on Amsoil, used Mobil1 once for 10K), and change both filter and oil.

Some others, though, say that you should do 5000 miles tops. *shrugs*

Welcome to the board!

I used the castrol synthec 10w and not really like it, going to try out mobil on next oil change

If everyone searched and just read old topics....there wouldnt be much discussion would there!!

Anyone have recommendations for easily available Canadian products??

i know it has been discussed but for a new person it is always a new and well discussed topic. But yeh search first. And FYI castrol syntec is not fully synthetic. Ask anyone, it is s***. Go with Mobil 1 that is what is the best (considered by most) and most recomended.

i am so sick to death of members telling people to do a search all the time. if you don't want to answer the question, then don't! who cares if its been discussed a million times before. obviously that person wasn't involved with previous threads. don't be so goddamn rude about it to new members who most likely don't know about the search feature. i know i sure as hell didn't at first. lighten up people.

^ what he said... :D

I'm in the same boat... 10K miles though, just bought Mobil 1 5w-30 today at Sam's (6 quarts $23). I bought some good oil filters off Ebay & plan to run it 7K miles.

Royal Purple here plus a good filter. Changed every 5000 miles. Oil is expensive but worth it in my opinion. Their product is what we use in our big pumps at work and they run all the time without problems.

Good luck,

i second and third that notion. simply don't respond if you've got nothing helpful to say.

Realistically, searching gets you better answers to your questions. If its been discussed before (Numerous Times!!!) then most people who know the correct answer won't reply, b/c all you have to do is use the search feature. I think it comes down to laziness. Yea searching can take some time, but once you use it, it's your best friend on the forum. Don't b**** about older members not answering the question or telling you to use the search. We've all been told it before. Why would we continually want to talk about oil or anyting for that matter that has a new thread started every week it seems.

Use the search!

Stop bitching!

.....and wlecome to the forum! :)

I'm currently using Mobil Synthetic Oil (5w30) with OEM filter. Use the factory stuff for the first year and then made the switch around 9k.

Like Astral said, use Mobil 1 or Amsoil. I used the Mobil one and just changed to Amsoil becasue Astral ordered me some along with symthetic trans fluid.

I let the oil go between 7 and 10K and plan on the trans fluid going for the remaining time I own the car.

Symthetic fliuds are good s***........

Chris, I use Mobil1 in my car. Honestly I have noticed little difference since switching. But then again, I have no complaints either. I still do my changes at 8k intervals.

I would use Mobil1 0W-30

Mobil1 is the way to go, however if you are running a FI, don't run thinner than 5w30.

I've been running Mobil1 since the day my vehicle arrived at the dealership. Even before I drove it home, I had the dealership change the oil for me. Good Stuff.

Royal Purple is the best bang for the buck.
