Most carmakers are rushing to launch new models in the burgeoning crossover and lifestyle vehicle segments but Suzuki still sees significant room for growth in the crowded and competitive midsize sedan market. The carmaker rolled out two new sedan concepts in the past six months, the previous Kizashi 1 and Kizashi 2 concepts, and is now planning a third variant for the upcoming New York Auto Show.

The midsize sedan market in the U.S. for instance has seen more than 20 new models introduced in the past couple of years. The competition proved so tough that Suzuki pulled out its previous Verona sedan (a staid Daewoo-based model) back in 2006 but now it plans to fight back, American Suzuki vice president Gene Brown revealed to Wards Auto. Verona was not a Suzuki-built product, and it didnt necessarily represent our brand as well as wed like, Brown explained. If we do move into a larger sedan category again, as we are looking at, we would do it with our own product.

Suzuki realizes it cant compete with segment leaders like the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, and Chevrolet Malibu, so to differentiate its new model the carmaker is thinking of fielding a slightly smaller model than the rest of the competition. Average midsize is right on the cusp of fullsize, Brown said. Thats probably a larger vehicle than Suzuki needs.

Brown said expect to see a production version of one of the Kizashi concepts, a future D-segment sedan that will eventually be available with a hybrid option.

Yeah, they've definitely got some work to do, because, while I don't mind the concept, anything I can imagine it turning into for production would be hideous.

^^ LOL, true. I was thinking of the "modern" one (the one that comes now "integrated" to the helmet). Something like this:

Hiding under yards of heavy black vinyl, padding and netting, is the all-new mid-sized family saloon from Suzuki: the Kizashi.

Although the name may change, this is the production version of the concept which made its world debut at the New York Auto Show earlier this year. Obviously toned down a bit from the sleek concept, the Kizashi will be built in Sagara, Japan, and will arrive at dealerships in early 2010.

Power-wise, were expecting the base model to be equipped with a 150+ horsepower 2.3-litre 4-cylinder engine, and the top-of-the-lrange Kizashi will be powered by a 3.6-litre V6 (with 280 to 300 bhp) mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission.

Production Suzuki Kizashi revealed

Suzuki has a big media event planned tomorrow to unveil its new mid-size sedan, which we're all still calling Kizashi though no moniker has been made official. We'll be at that event tomorrow, but apparently the Kizashi has already begun mingling. Assuming these shots aren't from the future, Suzuki held another event at some point, somewhere that featured the new Kizashi as the guest of honor.

As you'll recall, the production Kizashi's design is based largely on a trio of Kizashi concepts that made the auto show circuit rounds last year. The latest was the Kizashi 3 unveiled at the 2008 New York Auto Show. The production model is mightily toned down compared to the testosterone-infused concept, but still handsome, especially the sporty model in brown. We'll leave any more judgments aside until we meet the production Kizashi in person tomorrow.

I would drive it. It looks sporty and will be cheap compared to other midsized sedans.

I didn't think of the Jetta immediately, but now that I see both of them, there is a bit of resemblance.

Suzuki has released three very different concept vehicles in the past 12 months, all grouped under the same ‘Kizashi’ heading. The most recent of these was the Kizashi 3, a stylish sedan concept unveiled at March’s New York Auto Show that was the closest of the three show cars to resembling anything close to a regular production vehicle.

A prototype for the new sedan was spotted recently testing in the U.S., and now we have the first image of the actual production version, which was snapped at a recent press event.

Suzuki has described the Kizashi as being a sporty sedan designed to compete with other mid-sized cars such as the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry. The car sits on a 4,650mm platform, which is 165mm shorter than a Camry, but its wheelbase is longer to accommodate more interior space.

The engine lineup will include two gasoline engines displacing 2.3L and 3.6L, and a 2.0L turbodiesel. Front wheel drive will be standard although an AWD option will be available for some models. A paddle-shifted six-speed automatic will also be offered.

The Kizashi will be manufactured at a brand new plant in Japan and will first be launched in Japan and the U.S. early next year. Other variants, including a hatchback and wagon, will likely be launched in Europe soon after the launch of the sedan. Stay tuned for an update as all the official info and images are scheduled to be released tomorrow.
