Sunroof Question!

Hi Everyone....I have a question concerning the factory sunroof on the 2002 MP5. I was wondering if the sunroof has a cover that closes over the glass to prevent glare from the sun? I have a honda Accord and I know it's sunroof has a pull over shade that does this, but I'm not sure about the P5. I live in Ontario Canada, so I don't know if there might be a difference from the Canadian and American versions either. Thanks for your time.

Yes, it has a manual pull shade with small vents in the front for circulation.

As stated above...it sure does....the shade is opened automatically when you open the moonroof (it drags it back as the moonroof opens) but you have to shut it manually....there are little vents in the front of it so that if all you are doing is tilting up the rear of the moonroof and not opening it all the way it won't try to suck the shade up aginst the glass, that is if you didn't manually open it before hand....and allow it to circulate air as well

Yes, the Canadian cars also have the manual sunshade. It's even more essential on the P5 because Mazda cheaped out and didn't deep-tint the sunroof glass.

On that note...When you go to tint the windows, make sure you ask the tinter to do the sunroof too! My dealer said most people forget about that.

I'd suggest against getting the roof tinted. The reason tinted sunroof glass is rare is because due to being in direct 90 angle with the sun, the tint will have a tendancy to crack and bubble with that much light - so unless you have colored glass, you shouldn't have tint there. This coming from a professional tint shop here in houston that tinted my car - though they could have just been scamming me because they are too lazy to tint my roof.

I'm just wondering because I never tinted any of my cars before but how much does it usually cost to get a descent tint job. I don't think I'm going to because I wanna go for a pure look if you get my drift. I wanna make it as OE looking as possible - wheels of course.

Another reason most people don't get the sunroof tinted in the aftermarket is that the tint shrinks as it seals to the glass. This has caused a number of sunroofs to shatter from what I have heard.

how to deal with the "clear" moonroof?

it seems to me that there's nothing the P5 owners can do to get the moonroof tint, right?
any other options?

My wife mentioned the other day that she thought that the sunroof shade had some reflective something or other on the exterior side of it.

So that when the shade was closed it would reflect the heat.

I will check it out myself but the car is about five hours away from me now and I won't see it for another three days.

Crap!! I think I am going through 'new car' withdrawl. lol

This topic came up on another board and it turns out a lot of people have had the sunroof tinted without any problems. I personally would do it if I was having tinting done.

Re the other side of the sunshade, mine's just plain dark grey, no reflective coating. I don't usually find that the sunroof is a big factor in the car heating up, though--using a windshield sun visor works well for me.

Funny, I didn't get my moonroof tinted, but it looks like it has tint on it anyway. It isn't very dark, but it's not clear either. Hmmm...

I've had mine tinted for about 10 months now - no problems. (I'm in So Cal.)
