Sunroof Installation..

I plan on getting a Sunroof Installed some time this week and I'm torn on what kind I should get.

Yes I Understand that I could have had the Sunroof as a Factory option but I refused to get that Bose system with the Sunroof.

They're are some options -

Just a Manual Pop up with the option to completely remove the glass,

A power Rag Top With a Wide opening, Leaning towards this but I'm not sure If it would look tacky or not.

A Spoiler that pops up and retracts on top of the car.

Or an Inbuilt that would work just as if it was from factory.

Also, would them cutting into my roof effect my Curtain airbags?

I thought I could live with out it because I had it in my previous car
(Volvo S40) And thought I never really used it, But I realized that I really liked having that opening because it was dark in the car and shined in some light and it really looked great at night.

Please Chime in and give thoughts/opinions/experiance/ and Recommendations if you live in Los Angeles/Ventura county.

My first thought: What about the warranty? Unless you're getting a dealer installed, Mazda authorized moon/sun roof, I'd be careful. Recommend you check with your dealer to see what you're options are.

Inbuilt would be my vote. I looked at the large cloth ones and they actually don't look too bad. Gives you a quasi-convertible feel.

Prior to being able to afford a moonroof, I had pop-ups installed in all my cars and they never ever leaked.

Most manuafacturers nowadays don't make moonroofs from the factory, they farm them out to another company anyway.

My vote: Inbuilt. Don't be afraid-as long as you can find a reputable installer. My suggestion would be to call a place you know will install moonroofs for people buying used cars. Enterprise Car Sales for example - they would probably tell you who they use. I know for a fact they do this b/c my buddy bought a Maxima from them and wanted an inbuilt moonroof so they had one installed...he's never had a problem with it.

The nice thing about factory sun/moon roofs is that they have drainage tubes that run down either the A or B pillar or both. This prevents any water puddling and the inevitable rusting condition. I don't know if there have been advancements in aftermarket ones or not, but at one time I was told not to do it for that reason (from a sunroof manufacturer). Of course, if you're only keeping it a few years, none of this may matter to you.

I'd go for a full sky roof that has a large opening....wish I had that on mine.....will want one on my next car no doubt!!

Yeah I Sat in the MKX at my dealer, that panoramic roof was Beautiful, the Rag Top will have a Big opening, Ill just have to open it to see it. I hope I have the time to get it installed by the end of August, Or have my mother Get a rental car for me.

What didn't you like about the Bose audio system? I was actually thinking about getting that installed in mine (which came with the normal non-Bose audio system)

The Centerpoint was trash, no mid range adjustment and the 2 woofers in the front doors got a bit muddy when the bass and sound was pumped up.

Get a Webasto Moonroof they auto close and all I had this one Installed on my Nissan Altima awesome moonroof.

*Make sure when the moon roof is installed that they add some padding between moonroof area where the glass slides into the car. Because if not any bumps on the road you will here your moonroof rattle and drive you nuts.

I had a sunroof installed in my last ride, 05 Tacoma crew cab. It was 100 times nicer than the factory one in my CX7. It cost a 1000.00 to install and had one button to control all features. Looked like factory and came with lifetime warranty, the unit was made by a company called AFTA, I think its german. Anyway it was done at a local shop that does all dealer work, too bad you are on the west coast, I am in NJ or I would give you the name. I say find a good shop and go for it.

There is one place in Orange County that does a great job.
It is called the Coach Auto Restyling.
They mostly do sunroof installations for dealers.
Call 714-639-8236 and talk to Gerald.
Tell him that Eddie with gray CX-7 sent you.
They also do leather seats as well. I just got mine done and it looks really good.
