Sub in spare tire / Subs in rear speakers

I know that this has been mentioned, but I want to hear a little more in depth / up to date discussion. I'm looking with an eye to my '10 M5 GT

I have seen that Mazda has made Subs that fit in the spare tires before. On ebay they seem to be in the $50 range. IF you're not looking to rattle windows - this sounds like a cheap answer. Does anyone know about these first hand?
I think they were an option on the P5 in '00-'02.

Another way to go, has anyone looked into putting subs in the rear 6x8's with an adapter plate?

love to hear any input / ideas.
 
I saw that sub and love it. my only concerns is that I'm not that experienced with speaker installs and my daughter's stroller takes up the whole width. Still might see if I can get a custom shop to fabricate something for me.
 
i had a P5 w/ the in-spare sub.
Actually i still havethe sub - when teh car was totalled i kept it ;-)

Those subs are nothing magical. They do add a little bit, but I took mine apart once and was astounded at small/crappy teh speaker in the unit is. Actually, there's a thread on here somewhere when I did it.
IIRS the speaker inside it is only like 4.5" or something.

That aside, the magic question is whether (a) the donut spare tire is the same size for the P5s and (b) the space in there is roughly the same size, the boxs does sit "inside" teh spare but it's on top and sticks above the rim by a bit.
It was only an option on '02.5-'03 BTW.

buuuut - I have that thing sitting in te hbasement. Maybe some day I'll pull it out and try the fitment.
 
don't know the measurements of the storage area in the back of the 5, but an 6.5" sub from ed would probably work fine if you just want a little bump in the trunk. possibly an 8" would fit, but would probably require some work. I think i read where the ed 6.5" would fit in a "shoebox" size box and a small amp, good to go. http://www.elementaldesigns.com/
 
When you put a sub where the spare tire goes, are you just riding around without a spare or do you mount the spare elsewhere?
 
The sub goes in the middle of the spare tire so that you still keep it. The spare is face down so there's a cavity to put something into it. An extension bolt goes down and connects to the shorter bolt that held the spare tire down.

All right, you've got my attention. Any pics of a sub in the spare tire?

Also, what's a rough price for a sub? I have an aftermarket receiver which I assume can handle it (JVC KD-S100).
 
its not in the spare, but after looking into the spare tire thing. I asked my friend who owns a audio/performance shop
he said he liked this unit infinity basslink ii powered subwoofer 250w

There are others that are slim and just fit in the trunk i found this for like 179 refurb with warrenty. and since it amped already just hook up wires and go.

I was looking into low profile subs to fit in the back above the spare tire but this small box can be easily moved its all in one.
I was worried i might just have to remove the spare since most boxes above the spare make getting the spare out a pain.
and he said it hit pretty hard for what it was 250 watts rms thats not bad. remember the mazda 5 is all open no having to pound through a trunk, makes a huge difference.

I've always like the basslinks,, but IMO they work better for cars that have a true trunk where it can be mounted / bolted in. While there is plenty of room, I know that some of us (like me) bought the car because of the room (I know I've filled mine floor to ceiling about every month, for the past 6 months). Hence the need for "hiding" something.

recently, I've found the Sound Ordnance™ B-8PT (http://www.crutchfield.com/p_777B8PT/Sound-Ordnance-B-8PT.html?tp=114) that I think could be mounted between the tire and the rear of the car.


Any one else have any stealth subs?
