Street Prepared build

Tirerack said they were available...I haven't followed up on it though. The Kosei's and Hoosiers have ben bumped down on the importance list right now. My next major purchase will be the AWR custom struts.

Yeah a new set of wheels and tires are a load of money and you'll probably benifit more from the struts for your suspension. how much weight does the removal of the AC save btw?

It's all piled in the middle of my garage right now. I'll try and weight it tomorrow. The compressor is pretty heavy...everything else is nominal.

That Mazdaspeed muffler is pretty heavy. Anyone want to comment on running a side exit exhaust just before the rear tire. I know it will sound like trash, but I'm not trying to impress people with the sound of my car. I'll just have to have the muffler shop bend me up another pipe.

Remember the SCCA has a 95 dB limit... a naturally aspirated 4cyl is GOING to be louder than the limit....

THat said, I am running no muffler on my MSP, and it actually sounds pretty good...

I was just thinking it may be another cheap option is to get wheel spacers to give you a wider track on your current wheels. but if you don't really care for dealing with those things then forget i said anything. I'm just throwing some random ideas out.
Regarding the exhaust, I don't know if that will affect the the exhaust gas flow velocity or anything technical crap like that. might be a good idea to get some opinions from the NA guys.

If you run spacers, make sure you also get longer wheel studs... the stock ones are marginal for aftermarket wheels without spacers...

Your turbo is you're muffler..lol. I could probably have a small glasspack or something welded into the pipe just after the second cat where the stock resonator used to be. They are only like $15. I could add 2 if it is still too loud. That would not only lower the weight but put it almost as close to the ground and the center of the car as possible.

I thought about running spacers with the 6" wide wheels I have now, but the extra weight of the Protege over the other cars that dominate Solo II would be better offset by a wider tire. Depending on what offset wheel I get I may still have a little room to move the wheel out...have to wait and see.

I think a 225 would be hard to fit without cutting up the fender inside. I know 225 is what the world challenge Protege's run

that's exactly the exhaust i'm having put together for the Solo II season. a guy in my region makes 'em...almost every ST competitor runs one now.(laugh)

it actually sounds ok on everything from neons to subarus...and not that loud. i think that's probably your best route.

scap, where is the noise limit published? how do they measure it? is that specific to SP? or is it a regional thing?

Yea...but they run it on a 17 inch rim. I'm only using a 15 inch so the tire to fender clearence is much better.

A little more progress today

I finished up the battery box mounting yesterday. Today I removed the cruise control and made a new plate for the where the radio used to be. In the third pic you can see where the A/c went into the firewall. The sticker on the radio plate is temporary until I figure out what switches I'll need there.

Just wondering, why are you choosing an MSP LSD over say, a quaife? Is there weight to be saved there also, or simply a money thing? Cause I know the MSP LSD is not exaclty the most reliable/best thing to be had. If you do get the MSP LSD, make sure you weld it better than Mazda did, or else there is a chance of it cracking apart, specially if you are running her especially hard. And also, are you going to be ditching the Power steering? you should consider it, as it's a heavy booger, and it's not really essential at moving speeds, only slow stuff...which you prolly should be too worried about.Oh, and I have no clue about the rules, is there a place where I could read up on the rules of whats allowed? thank you, and good luck

awesome, if mine wanst a daily driver, i would be doin it to, i think i get bumped up with you this year too, gotta lookinto that.

I'm going with the MSP LSD mainly for monetary reasons. It's about $1000 cheaper than the Quaife for me. I did plan on finishing the welding on it. I drove the car around a little without the powersteering hooked up and I couldn't stand it. It's not so bad when you are accelerating or cruising but I do a lot of trailbraking and under heavy braking the car didn't like to turn at all. I'm not really very strong in the upperbody so for right now the powersteering stays.

Heres a good listing of the rules for everything but Prepaired and Modified from 2002.

Somethings have changed, but this is pretty much the gist of it. If you really want the updated 2005 rules you can read through this pdf. file.
