Strange noise from dash with ignition at "On", before starting

Sound is worse now that it's cold. Goes away shortly after starting. Happens only on cold starts. I've had the hood open and the sound is definitely coming from inside the car, in behind the dash. Any ideas?

Who knew you had a new formula 1 car under your dash. :p

Anyway, my old Accord started to make a similar sound before I got rid of it. As far as I could tell it was either a fan on the audio system or the A/C fans that were starting to go. You can probably try pulling the fuse for the HVAC to see if that is the problem.

It could be a bunch of other things, but this is probably one of the easier things to check.

Before I do that ... I wonder that the HVAC fans would run at all with all controls (radio, fan, A/C) OFF.

Bump. Haven't gotten to it yet ... haven't driven the car even.

Anybody else want to jump in on this?

Hmmm ... so much for Mazda family help ....

I got a tech at Pugi, Downers Grove IL to listen to the video, and he suggested it might be a vent actuator, binding, and struggling.

Now, the problem is figuring out how to access the damned things without completely disassembling the dash.

Props to Pugi. They're a shining light in the stealership world.

You should create a "signature" that lets everyone here know what year engine size, and trim level you have.
