What you guys said makes about as much sense as what I typed above. Meaning I didn't understand a damn part of it. But I will tell them to look at that part at the dealer. Thanks guys. I will post what they say tomorrow.

He's saying the 100 amp fuse inline with the alternator from the battery is wacked and needs replaceing.

Did he mention where to get them?

I just checked my main fuse and it its showing a 0 ohm drop across it and no voltage loss so I don't think it its the problem.

Hey 1ST MP3 in NH, i think you're looking at the wrong fuse. The one in the fuse box is the main fuse. The fusible link should be connected to the alternator it's self on the back of the connection block. I haven't looked at it so i can't tell you what exactly which wire it is. It won't look like a fuse, or at leas shouldn't, should be a small diameter wire with a ring terminal connector and fairly thick insulation. They're designed to heat up and break in two when a high load is placed on them. Usually they're a 16-18 AWG wire, so thats a good place to start looking.

Damn dealers. Well I dropped my car off this morning at the dealer. I had an appt. @ 7:30 right when they opened to insure that my car was the first worked on for the day. I got there right at 7:30. So I go in and the guy starts the service right up on my car and asks me to explain what the car is doing. I tell him basically everything I said in my first post. This whole time he is just kind of taking this like it is no big deal and I got the feeling that he was just brushing me off. So then he goes to type all of this in the computer and does a print out and asks me to sign. Well before I sign anything I always read. Well what he put down was not what I told him! So I made him do it again. STRIKE 1!!! Then asked him about my loaner car. He says WHAT LOANER CAR and points to a sign that is hanging in the service bay that reads"DUE TO INSURANCE RESTRICTIONS NO LOANER CARS CAN BE PROVIDED TO SERVICE CUSTOMERS" I calmly explain to him that I was promised a loaner car when I made the appointment. He returns by asking me if I have anyone coming to pick me up. I stopped and asked if he was even listening to me because I just told him I was promised a loaner car. So he then says that I could catch a ride on the shuttle. He said the shuttle driver was not there yet so just to take a seat and wait for him to get there. STRIKE 2!!!! I gave him my cell # to reach me anytime during the day and told him that I would call by 1pm to check the status of the car and that at that time I expected him to have an answer and if he did not have an answer that he should a) have a loaner car at my work by 5pm b) have my car at my work by 5pm c) have the shuttle at my work by 5pm to bring me back to the dealership to either pick up a loaner or my car. He didn't like being told what he was going to do and said that the only way that they would give me a loaner is if my car was not finished by 5. (meaning they would have to keep it over night) STRIKE 3!!!! I calmly re-iterated the options that I gave to him previously and explained that finding out 10 minutes to 5 that I would have to find a ride back to the dealership to pick up my car or a loaner was not an acceptable option for me. At this point he tells me to wait in the customer lounge for the shuttle. Just as I am getting ready to sit down he stops me and says you know that your car is due for it's first oil change. WHAT!!!!! I reach into my bag and pull out the folder I keep on the car and pull out the receipt from their dealership showing I had my first oil change more than a month ago and more than 1000 miles ago. His reaction was HHMMMMM . STRIKE 4!!!! So at this point I decided to throw in the prinout of BLYNZOO's post about NC Lemon Laws. I told him to hang it above his desk as a friendly reminder to fix my car RIGHT the 1st time and as to what would happen if it wasn't. He asked where I got it from and I told him about our marvelous little website. I also mentioned that someone else with a P5 had a similiar problem and that the dealer replaced the fusible link between the alternator. He looks at me in amazement and says wow I have never heard of that before!!!!!!? OK so you would think that the rest of the morning went ok BUT....... it is now 8:15 and still no shuttle. I ask him what is going on. He returns with a very elderly black man in coveralls and says that he will give me a ride to work. We go outside and there is this like 1990 MPV that says Mazda Parts on it sitting there. YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING I SAY. You should have seen this thing it was a total turd. Stains all over the inside, half of the trim pieces including that around the steering column are missing and you ought to hear this thing run. And here I am in a business suit. So we leave and this thing is more of a turd than I first thought. It was cold and rainy this morning and the heat didn't work and on top of that this guy pulls out a swisher sweet or something and starts smoking. THAT THING SMELLED LIKE ASS. So since his window is down I figure what the hell and open my window. Well try to at least . it only goes down a crack. I had to chain smoke my cigarettes just to keep from puking from the smell of his cigar. I start talking to the guy and can barely understand him. Find out that he is the parts runner and that he was making a run to pick up some parts but that he doesn't usually drive people. So I finally get to work this morning. 9:00. Well work started at 8 and as I am walking in my cell phone starts blowing up. It's been pretty busy this morning and I have typed this post in kind of parts to let a little steam off here and there . I actually started the post when I came in this morning but since I have no car and no way to leave for lunch I figured I would finish it. WHEW!!!!!!!! Sorry to go on so long but had to get all of that out. (bang) (pissed) (argh)

Sounds like you need to go to a different dealer. I always get a loaner car when I take mine in for warranty work. It doesn't matter if it take 15 minutes or 15 hours, they give me a loaner car. You just have a bad dealer. Go to a different one and your problems will be solved. As for the service, you will most likely get that at every dealer. Most of these people know nothing about cars. If they did they wouldn't be the person who does the paper work, they would be the technicians and getting paid more. Most of theses service peoploe are dumb uneducated morans who probably don't even know what an altenator is. If this is your first new car with a waranty, get used to it unless you buy from a luxury car dealer.

damn. that sucks man. about the fusible link. they said they fixed it gave me an idea what it was an i dindt ask anymore. i wish i would have so i could tell u where to look but i wasnt paying attention. sorry about that. anyhow,i wish i coulda came an given u a ride home after all that drama.. that is just too much for one day.. but since we are puttin service departments on blast.. i got one for u..
i was so impressed with the way they fixed the fusible link problem i decided to take my car to the dealer for its first oil change.. its was like 25 bux.. i had my girl take the car there and she was there for 3 hours.. 3 hours for a oil change.. what the hell? then they tried to tell her that her air filter needed to be replaced. the car has 3000 miles on it and i know we have bad air in cali.. but come on it aint that bad.so she takes the car an comes back to me. great.. i drove the car around for 2 days. that night i pulled up in my drive way only to notice a pool of oil under my car. whats goin on i wondered? i grabbed my handy mag light an looked under. no drain plug at all. i stuck my finger in to see if the area was broken away like i hit somehting. nope. still threaded.. tahts wierd i thought..
i went to bed after i layed out a s*** load of cat litter i had to WALK to the store and buy. so i call mazda in the moring and they tell me a tow truck will be there right at 8. then they would drop me of at work by 9 or give me a loaner car for the day. The towtruck shows up at 12:30. so i had already called work an told em i was late. i asked the tow truck guy why he was so late an he said mazda just called him a hour ago.. fine.. he put my car on the truck an said ok im goin. when i asked if i could catch a ride there with him he looked shocked. but he took me. i got to mazda and found the service manager. i asked why it took so long to get here and he appolagised. he asked what was wrong with my car and i told him.. well it was here 2 days ago with a drain plug an oil. you changed the oil.. and now there is no drain plug or oil. you tell me. so he gets in his lil service shack an starts typing.. prints it out an goes.. please sign this.. and i will read directly off his paper "customer claims car was here 2 days ago for oil change. He says there is no drain plug or oil and this is a warranty issue". i refused to sign it. i then presented my reciept for the oil change 2 days prior. he changed it to "customers car was here 2 days ago oil plug may not have been put in all the way." fine i sign and ask for my loaner car.. sorry no loaner car.. i ask for a ride.. sorry the shuttle left.. i ask them to pay for a cab sorry we cant do that. so i call my friend.. he leaves work and comes an picks me up in his 2002 cobra svt. we take off.. i call every hour.. on the hour until 5 when they tell me my car is ready. i go back to get it an there is oil on the steering wheel
great. the service guy then tells me. hey i wont charge u for the oil plug or the oil change. thanks buddy. i then went and spoke with the manager and told him about the problem. i told him i wanted somehting in return for jumping thru these hoops because they were too stupid to change the oil. he offered me a free oil change.
lets see.
1 days wages $15hrX8 =$120
Lunch for me an my friend that picked me up $10
gas money cus that cobra sucks petrol $10

Free oil change = $30
tell me how this evens out.
any ways thats enuff whinning. good luck.. be glad u only had to ride with smokey joe.. at least they didnt tell u.. me so sorry.. we have no car fo u.

I would have them inspect the motor to see if any damage was done to it fromt he lack of oil. If you have any problems in the future, make sure you keep those reciepts so you can prove that they didn't tighten the drain plug and the lack of oil did damage to your motor. If I were you, I'd burn down the dealership.

i did.. i also had them put in the notes that in fact they did leave the plug out.. and i had the service manager and the technician and myself signed 2 copies ofit.. if that does hold up in court i guess imma have to take blood samples with the signatures. LoL
thanks big ben

According to Mazda, you should be covered under the "Mazda Service Transportation Solution" . I quote from the website:

Of course, even repairs without charge still mean that the dealer has your car. We know
there's never a good time to be without your wheels-and with the Mazda Transportation
Solution, you won't have to be. Repairs under warranty will no longer keep you off the road.
Take your car in for warranty work at a participating Mazda dealership, and you can get a
loaner car at no charge. Just ask. You won't have to arrange your day around a repair
schedule, ask friends for rides, or catch up on your magazine reading while you wait. The
Mazda Transportation Solution is in effect for every 2001, 2002 and 2003 Mazda for the
duration of the new-vehicle warranty. You'll find all the details at your Mazda Dealer.

I would contact Mazda Customer Service after you've finished with this appointment and give them a review of the experience. and then find a different dealer service department to deal with.

Well I just called them again. I called at 1 and at 3. At 1 they said the service manager still had to take it for a road test?????WTF?????? he said he would call in a few hours. told him bull$hit you will call me by 3. well 3:15 and no call yet so I call them up. Uh yeah I already called and left a meesage that the car was ready. Uh HUH then who the hell did you call, cause it sure as hell wasn't me. My cell phone number is the number they have and since I don't have a home phone and my cell never really leaves my side hmmmmmmm.. beeen making calls and getting them but none from you.... Kind of caught him off guard with that one. Then he says that he will go and check. Well gee I guess the service manager took the car out for the road test he says. Ok have HIM call me when he gets back I say, not you but HIM cal me. Well I just called them a few minutes ago and acted like nothing was wrong and that I hadn't been trying to call all day and the guy takes my name and goes yes sir your car is all ready to go!!!!!... So I ask hi why my car has been there all day and I have not received one phone call from their dealership??????? thats when he starts telling me what they actually did and trying to tell me that the car was in several different bays and several machanics had worked on it and not all of them had updated the computer in a timely manner. I then only asked one more question...... What time does the SERVICE MANAGER work until. He said 6 and then asked why. All I said was OK thanks see you after 5 and hung up. Boy I can't wait to get ahold of this guy after work. I actually met the guy during my purchase of the car and because he was so nice and knowledgeable I decided to go ahead with the extended service. We'll just have to see how nice he is after I get done ripping him a new one tonight. Oh yeah btw they said that to fix the problem they did the following things.

1. Reprogrammed the ecu and cleared all fault codes(he didn't know what codes it gave though)

2. Adjusted the idle higher(gee thanks 5 minutes and a screw driver on that one)

3. He also siad that the cleaned the throttle postion sensor. He said that sometimes the sensor will cause the car to rev irratically(WHAT I didn't know P5's were drive by wire)

Will let you guys know what happens after I pick the car up and put her through her paces. hmmmm I know which way I am taking home

id take the way home with lots of lights an call boxes.. heh.. i donno your dealer an my dealer prolly hire from the same website. -=).
good luck

Read the liturature you got when you bought the Protege. All new Mazdas after 2001 get loaner cars for when they are brought in for service.

Well it looks like the friendly dealer strikes once again. Just for future reference you probably won't get a loaner car. In the quote posted earlier from mazda's website they say
Take your car in for warranty work at a participating Mazda dealership, and you can get a
Which means that the dealer doesn't have to supply you with a loaner car if they don't participate in the transportation program. Something else is it doesn't really sound like they did much to your car funwagon...i'll buy the ecu reprogramming, thats usually a first anyways. What i dont know about is cleaning the TPS...you might want to ask specifics on that, you can't really clean them. If you take them apart you get to buy a new one since they're sealed, you can however clean the connectors, but on a car with less than 5K they shouldn't be corroded unless it sat on the lot for a year or more. I'm sorry but it urks my nerves to see people treated like that at dealers, when i worked for one i had been on the other side of the counter before so i tried to treat people as such. These guys are the reason 90 some odd percent of people that come into service dept's are pissed off before one single word is ever said.

This is one of the reasons I realy wished Acura hadn't F-ud the RSX and made it such an estorgine induced mess. I love our local Acura dealer. They never screwed me in anyway and the one time they messed up and kind of gave me s***, I got apologies form the Tech, Service managers and my salesmen called me to apologies also. And they didn't even mess anything up they just mis diagnosed the problem and gave me some bad info.

does any mazda dealer participate in the loaner car thing? lemme kno. cus i kno mine doenst.. an fun wagons doesnt either.

OK well I picked up my car last night and everything seemed to be ok. Had alot to do last night so didn't really get to put it through the paces I wanted to. So this morning I go out and start my car to warm it up and get the ice off the windshield. Well as soon as I start it the damn thing revs up to like 2000-2500 . Hmm never done that before but I just figured ahhhh it's cold out and the car has gone into cold start cycle or something. So I shrug it off. Well then on the way to work I notice that it is driving a little different, like when I am sitting at idle(before it was flucuating between 0 and 1500 and now it just sits at 900-1000 but there is a loping kind of feel to it like the thing has a cam or something. I am kind of used to this due to my Truck which lopes like a madman at idle but in a 4 cyl brand new car....uhhh I don't think so. It never did that when I bought it. So that is problem #1.

on to problem #2. I parked the car this morning and didn't drive it again until about 4 hours later. The temp outside had gone from around 31 to about 50 something. I start the car and bam it tachs up around 2k again. I wait for a minute to let it warm up and see if the rpms come down ... well they don't. so I go ahead and drive over to pick up lunch. It stays pretty much above 2k at idle until I am almost to my dest. about 5-8 minutes. Ok I am still not that upset about this although it has never done this before. well as I am going there I notice something odd that ends up really pissing me off (ie Problem #2) Let me give you the situation. Driving in 4th gear at about 45mph coming up to take a 90 deg. right turn. I push the clutch in and shift to second and hold the clutch in as I apply the brakes until I am in the area of 15-20mph at which point I let the clutch out and make the turn. Ok so here is the problem. When I pushed the clutch in the rpms drop until they get to 1500 at which point they stop dropping and actually go back up anywhere from 100 to 500 rpms before dropping all the way down. Hmmm so my clutch is in and the car should be decelerating since clutch in brakes being applied and no gas being given but the rpms are going up. SCARY THOUGHT that somehow my car is getting power when none is being applied. I have only owned 1 auto an that is my truck. And not one sinlge manual car I have owned or for that matter any one that I have driven including the P5 when I bought it have ever done this. Maybe this is why it feels like there are little surges as I am driving. the car is giving itself more gas or something.

So I get back to the office and before I even sit down to eat I pick up the phone and call the dealer. I ask for the service manager and they put me through to an advisor. I ask again for the manager, finally get in touch with him and he is fairly nice(DAMN WELL BETTER BE) I explain the entire situation from yesterday and today. He says that he will speak to the advisors as to all of the problems that I had yesterday but wants to talk more about the current complaints. He explains what I had already thought about the revving above 2k being a normal thing for cold cycle starts. (DOES ANYONE ELSE CAR DO THIS WHEN IT IS COLD????) He then says he is a little worried about the pause at 1500rpm and then the rpms rising. he then tells me the only thing that I can do is bring it back over there and take him for a test drive with him in the car. I set up a time to do that tomorrow, I also let him know that I want it recorded that I had to come back to the dealership the very next day after service. I also inform him that when I bring it in that it will be #2 of 4 visits required to satisfy the lemon law and that I am NOT HAPPY. Guy stayed pretty calm and told me that he would see me tomorrow and that he would take care of the poor service I had received the day before. OHHH get this he says he is not that familiar with manual trans. cars because there are so fewwwww out there. WTF????? He then tells me that if they get a manual P5 on the lot he will drive it to see if it has the same problems or same symptoms. Hmmm I was there last night and they almost 20 P5's and not one a manual!!!!! A little weird I thought" So that is where I am at.

Just on a side note I decided that if I end up having to get a new car due to lemon law that I will be getting a refund on my P5. I will replace it with most likely a Cooper S, as it is essentially a bimmer and they treat you like a friggin king at BMW dealerships wether it is warranty or not. I know from experience from my 88 M3. Hate to shun mazda all together but this situation is really starting to piss me off.

The engine revving to around 2K at cold start is normal. It should drop down to around 1300-1500 after 10-15 secs and remain in that range until the temp gauge moves to off the first notch (god i miss gauges with numbers). The problem with the rpm's surging could very well be from them playing with the TPS sensor the day before. If they've misadjusted it then it could be telling the ecu that the throttle is partially open when it's really not and the ecu is trying to correct for that.
