First off, welcome to the forum Emma!

Mine growls every tiome I start it. Of course, that is the aftermarket intake, header, and exhaust I put on it.

But if your is not modified, I would check the engine to see if anything is out of the ordinary. Can you take a digital video of the engine after it sits, and record the sound?
It might just be the fact that when the engine is cold, is sucks in more air than when it is warmed up. Just thinking while typing, check your air filter. See if it has wire mesh with fabric in it. Might be a K&N air filter. It allows for more air to flow through, and that might be the growl you get.

Oh, if you are not sure about any parts, take a pic, and post it on the forum. We can probably tell you if the car has been modified.

Keep us posted!

That could be normal for our cars. Mine does that too when you first start it up - it's kind of a rattling/growling sound that only lasts for a second. I read something about it here in the P5 forum within the last week. I'll see if I can search for it and post the result.

After searching for awhile, I'm giving up because I can't find what I read. But I did come up with something about a cold start knocking TSB that requires an ECU flash. Something about ignition mapping. Anybody know what the heck I'm talking about (cause I sure don't)?

Yes, you are referring to the VTCS noise, swirling the gas to increase cumbustion efficiency on a cold engine. I wouldn't call it "growling", more like the fluttery noise a diesel engine makes.
I had the ECU flash and it helps a little. The noise goes away when the engine is warm.
It's not harmful - if u want to check if it's this causing the noise you are referring to, it's dead easy to pull the VTCS vacuum pipe off and block it up.
I'm sure there's pictures as to how to do this somewhere.

yeah, it sounds pretty rough on a cold start. when it's warm my baby purrs like a kitten :D

As far as i know this is normal. if my car has sat a day and then i start it up its a tad noisey but then quiets when warmed up.

I cannot remember that far back, when I only had factory parts on my engine. Sounds like it might just be normal. Pretty dpiffy ten!

While this is common, it is not normal...there is a tsb on it, but I dont know the number....its referred to as the "cold engine rattle" I think.....mine does it too, I just have to bring it in soon....supposedly there is a valve in there that makes this noise, they replace it, and do something else, and the noise goes away.....I dont think it hurts your car at all, but it does sound pretty crapy.....I have not heard of anyone having a problem having this taken care of as long as you are still under warranty....

here is the tsb # and issue date for the problem on 2003 pr5....found by doing search for "cold engine rattle", but forget which thread...its one of the first that comes up....

Thank you!

Wow--you are all so quick with your replies and so helpful--I'm glad I asked.

Guess I'll take her in for a visit to the dealer...

Thanks!

Sure there's not a Pitbull in the back? Hehehehehe...
OK... I'm done.
Sorry.

Change the air filter.

I give a rats ass about 10k miles. I swear 5k is ideal for the P5.

Question, what exactly is a TSB? Will I be charged for it, or will the dealer do it under warranty? My car's an 02 Protege5, 44k kilometres, and I have no idea when it was first purchased. To get a dealer to look at it do I just have to bring them the TSB number?
